Title: Road trip -- Central NJ to Charleston, SC and back
Post by: Alexis Alvarez on July 06, 2017, 08:40:32 pm
Will be driving down to Charleston to check out the eclipse, for a 9-day trip. I've got lots of recommendations for Charleston itself, but would like to know if anyone can offer suggestions about sites on the trip back north. I've 4-5 days to make the return. Interested in landscapes, gardens, ruins/deserted places/ghost towns -- just about anything decrepit

Suggest you consider Airlie Gardens in Wilmington, NC, Brookgreen Gardens south of Myrtle Beach, SC & Manteo, NC (small town near coast).

If you're going as far as Charleston, make the time to drive two hours south to Savannah.  The cemeteries and historic squares alone would be worth it for you, I bet :)  I just got back from my first time there and I was utterly enchanted by the city.

When heading north from Charleston, SC head east towards Cape Charles to Virginia Beach and on to Norfolk. Take the Chesapeake Bay Bridge & Tunnel to the Virginia eastern shore. Go north to Somerset and/or Worcester counties in Maryland. Take 113 to Pocomoke City and check out the Pocomoke State Forest. This Cypress State forest is the most northern Cypress forest on the east coast and there is lots of wildlife and abandoned towns on the way up route 113. Stay on route 113 to Delaware and take the ferry to Cape May or stay on 13 all the way to New Jersey.

+1 for Brookgreen Gardens. Before traveling to Savannah check out what Charleston has to offer; some online research on Charleston. I've been to each many times and I think on the whole Charleston offers a lot more to photograph. I wouldn't waste anytime in Myrtle Beach. Generally speaking the low country of South Carolina has a lot of interesting locales to photograph. Georgetown might even be worth a bit of your time.

The eclipse won't last for long so spend some time planning your trip. IMO coastal N.C & S.C. are more interesting that the central areas.
