Title: Phase IQ3 100MP Macbook Tether Speeds?
Post by: RossF on July 06, 2017, 03:43:25 pm
Hi everyone,

Renting a Phase back for a shoot next week and debating between the 80mp or 100. 100MP might be overkill...anyone know the compressed raw file size? Can't seem to find the info online.

Do you think it'd be slow tethering to a Late 2013 15in Retina Macbook, usb3, core i7, 16gb ram, 1tb SSD. NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB & Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB graphics card.   Would there be any perk to renting a 2016 Retina Macbook?

Shooting people in studio, not super fast motion but don't want to wait forever for buffers.

You've got USB3 builtin and a SSD drive, so those are the biggest things.  As to deciding between the 80mp and the 100mp, I'd push you in the direction of the 100mp.  The file size difference isn't that much, but the slightly higher base ISO is kind of nice, and if you want to really push things.

Actual file size difference will be based on the images, but I just checked the DT reference shots (EIPs) with both the 100mp and 80mp and they're about 116mb and 72mb respectively.

Keep in mind that the 2016 MBP is going to have the dongle fun to get a USB3 jack, so if you go that route have a spare adapter ready.  Go with the XF with power sharing, plus turning off charging on the back and you should be fine.

I agree with Joe.

I just did a test with the IQ3 100MP and the file sizes came out: (they will very slightly)

IIQ L 16bit 136.8MB
IIQ L 95.9
IIQ S 55MB

I would recommend going with the IQ3 100MP since it is CMOS and you will have better Live View and will have the  ES shutter. HDMI might be useful also.

I don't think you should have any problem with the 2013 15in. I use a 2015 core i7 16gb memory and SSD drive. I heard you will have the best luck using the USB connector on the right side of the MB. Supposed to be the first one in the chain and better for tethering.

Good luck and happy shooting.

I don't know where you're located but if in NYC or LA you'd be welcome to schedule an appointment at our office and test the tethering speed of both models to your own laptop as well as a variety of laptops and towers we have on hand. We provide that kind of pre rental service to anyone renting from us.

Note that the size of IIQ-S is highly dependent on image content.

Thanks! I forgot the newer macbooks don't have USB! Shooting with all strobes bright lighting at iso 100 so CMOS vs CCD shouldn't be too much of a difference, but maybe I'll go for the 100MP. I'm in Chicago but can test it out at one of the rental houses here.
