Title: Printing Profile Targets: My Plan for Canon Pro-4000
Post by: gdi on June 29, 2017, 12:27:28 pm
Could the color gurus here please weigh on whether my plan to print targets on 24 and 44" paper makes sense?  I am using iMatch for profiling now - but will receive a kit with iProfiler soon - and I want to figure out how to print a 2 page target across one width of a wide  24 or 44inch roll of paper.  The software always wants to print two pages and that is very wasteful.

My thought is to bring the two tifs of a 918 patch target into PS6 and combine them into one image at the same resolution they come into PS with.  And then I can use Canon Print Studio Pro to print them with no color management.  I am having some trouble getting PSP to keep the original size of the image and not expand or reduce it.

I know that I will need to be careful about PS tagging the image with a profile and hopefully I will figure out how to strip that out when saving the combined image.  Can anyone offer advice on the practicality of my approach and how I might make sure I print the image at the proper size via PSP?

Thanks

If you use i1Profiler you can define a custom paper size up to 50x50 inches. No need to split the target into sections.

One question: why a 918 patch target? That was a target developed nearly 20 years ago by Bill Atkinson for ProfileMaker version 4 (perhaps even V3). You'll get superior results with an i1Profiler-created target. See this post (http://forum.luminous-landscape.com/index.php?topic=118476.0) for more details. All else being equal, I recommend an i1Profiler target size that (a) maximises the number of near-neutral patches, (b) has a symmetric base color cube (i.e. the same number of RGB steps in each dimension, and (c) has an odd number of RGB steps from 0 to 255. We saw this combination to produce the best results within i1Profiler.

Sensible target sizes therefore are an 11x11x11, 13x13x13, or 15x15x15 base color cube with maximal neutrals. These give i1Profiler patch counts of 1457, 2371, and 3605 respectively. Either of the first two can go on a single 22" page layout from within i1Profiler.

Thanks, Ethan, great info!

Well, I just came home and my i1Photo kit had arrived, so I am not yet familiar with iProfiler and the various target options.  I have been stuck in the past with iMatch and that's why I was going with the 918 patch target.  I'll setup the new kit now and see if I can print some side by side targets (after I check your link, of course).  I'll see if I can identify a chart in iProfiler that meets you spec - a, b, and c.

Thhanks again!
