Title: Capture One 10 Keywords
Post by: owinthomas on May 18, 2017, 11:10:33 am
Just finished watching the LuLa Guide to Capture One Pro 10 and I have to say I'm disappointed with the keyword functionality.

I like keywording my images, maybe I'm not as anal as Seth Resnick, but I do keyword a lot.

I don't like the fact that keyword hierarchies are not being used logically ... or they don't appear to be,  maybe I've missed something.

For example, if I were to take an image in, say, The Grassmarket area of Edinburgh, Scotland in the U.K. I would, in Lightroom, click on my  Grassmarket keyword, which would add it to my image, along with the parent keywords and synonyms Edinburgh, Auld Reekie, Scottish Capital, Scotland, U.K., Great Britain and Europe.

I can't see this functionality being available in COP 10. Am I wrong?

I may have this wrong but you can enter the following in the keyword field for the image and it will be stored in the Keyword Library.
Europe<Great Britain<U.K.<Scotland<Scottish Capital<Auld Reekie<Edinburgh<Grassmarket

You can also go the other way. Grassmarket>Edinburg>....

The keywords will be added to your image and placed in the Keyword Library

From the help page -

More about hierarchical keywords:

Hierarchical keywords are displayed in the Keywords tool UI as a flat list but retain their hierarchical relationship in the Keyword Library. To see the relationship, mouse over the keyword in the Keywords tool to get tool tip showing the full path.

If the same keyword exists in more than one Keyword Library then the keyword label is appended with its child relationship to help distinguish in the UI which list it belongs to. See managing lists for more information on making additional Keyword Library.

Hope that helps

@uptownguydenver ... ah right ok thanks.

That wasn't made clear in the video. It wasn't as extensive as the various LuLa Guides to Lightroom etc.

Guess I need to download the free trial and play around with it a little before making my mind up.

Yes download the 10.1 version and check it out.
Here is a webinar on youtube about keywords and keyboarding. Version 9 but should be the same or better in Version 10

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKZsbwIWHo4

Also you can load keyword libraries from places like the LR Keyword Project

https://lightroom-keyword-list-project.blogspot.gr

And of course you can export keyword libraries from one Capture One catalog to share in other catalogs, sessions and other Capture One on other computers.

For the benefit of the OP, its worth mentioning that C1 cataloguing is still a relatively new feature and it makes small but important improvements at C1 point releases, not just new versions. Even a small difference in how it works could make a big difference to an individuals work flow.

So any video except those made with 10.1, may well be out of date on how C1 works today.  So once you get to the Capture One Youtube channel, which for some reason is now different to the Phase one Youtube channel,  check out the What is new in each version videos as well as the other cataloguing and organisation videos.

The latest videos are no longer on the Phase One channel (at least I can't find them) but they are here:

The functionality is in there, as far as I understand your question.  :)

Let us say that you have added the hierarchical keywords U.K. > Scotland > Edinburgh > Grassmarket to an image. Those hierarchical keywords are now added to the Keyword Library under Catalog Keywords and can be reused just by clicking on them here.

OK, let us say that you now want to add some or all of of the hierarchical keywords and keep their hierarchy. If you select an image and click on Grassmarket, all four keywords will be applied. If you only click on Scotland, only U.K. > Scotland will be applied.

Hope it makes sense...

All the best, Nils

Correct, clicking or adding a lower child in the hierarchy will add the whole parent hierarchy chain above it.
Setting up a well-structured hierarchy in a "Keyword list" in advance can save a lot of work, and it helps to structure keyword usage across sessions/catalogs.

Bart

Thanks everyone for the useful info. I've checked out the keyword videos on YouTube and it is much clearer. I don't know why I got the functionality confused ... brain fart I reckon  :-[.

Thanks again all.
