Title: LR stuck in maximised (Apple green button) mode
Post by: jeremyrh on April 19, 2017, 04:26:17 am
When I maximise LR on my screen by pressing the green button on my Mac, I can't return to non-maximised mode. I've seen some posts from ages ago about being stuck in Full Screen mode, but this is a bit different. I can change modes from Library to Develop etc, I just can't get rid of LR except by quitting. That's not the end of the world, but it is annoying! Has anyone else experienced this?

(I am in any case contemplating reducing my monthly expenses by ditching my Adobe subscription in favour of using C1 + Pixelmator instead of LR+PS. Maybe this will be the straw that breaks the camel's back :-)  )

This is Apple's full screen mode, Jeremy, so don't you just move your mouse to the top of the screen which makes the menu area appear, including that green dot which you can just click again?

That's the thing - when I do that it doesn't make the green blob appear again :-(  Actually sometimes it does - the problem is intermittent!

I'd just blame that on the Mac full screen mode!

Use shift-F to toggle between full screen mode and windowed mode. And if you use the green button just move the cursor up to the green button and click again. Then it goes back again (at least for me).

Maybe you're right - either way it seems they don't play nicely together!

You should not use the green button ;) Use shift-F.

It used to for me as well, but now I can't get the green button back again :-(  - I am stuck in this mode (that I called "maximised" to distinguish it from LR full screen mode)

Patient:  Doctor, doctor... it hurts when I do this.  Doctor:  don't do that.

You can chose to heed the advice or just complain.  Your choice.

Yes, Jeremy, I know but the real It-guy response would be to reinstall OSX and Lightroom :)

Attached is how the green button comes out for me every time I move the cursor to the top of the screen. I use OSX 10.12.4. When I use OSX full screen mode and not shift-F.

Try the escape key (esc). Works for me.

Esc does not work for me taking LR out of OSX full screen mode. But it does take you out of full screen invoked with an F. I never use OSX full screen with LR, I use shift-F to toggle between window and full screen with or without the menu bar visible.

Yes, this is a legitimate bug. Adobe does not play well with the Mac OS full screen mode. I, and I'm certain, many others already reported this. The workarounds suggested are fine; the Shift-F being preferred.

I suspect that 'bug' only appears when the OS menu bar is hidden - not the std Mac screen view.

Yes, you're right - I have my OS menu bar in "hidden" mode to maximise my laptop screen space.

For goodness sakes - just use Shift-f!! Works every time!

For goodness sakes - have we turned into dpreview? I asked if others had noticed a specific behaviour. I learned that it is a known bug with Lr, and that there is a reliable workaround. Thanks to the posters who provided that information.

Have you tried resetting the preferences? Particularly on Mac, it can resolve many such oddities.

I never used that feature (I did not even notice it became available!). I set the auto hide menu and it still works for me to have the green maximize button show when LR is in OSX full screen mode.

I also tested with the various Shift F options before replying to Jeremy. As far as I can see, Lightroom is working as expected with the Mac Full Screen mode (FWIW it's not as pure a Mac Full Screen implementation as some other apps) and moving the mouse key should reveal the green dot. Move the mouse as if you're going up beyond the limits of the screen.

I'm wondering if there is a confusion between the full screen mode achieved through shift-F and the OSX full screen mode. In my testing the green dot has consistently appeared regardless of the menu bar hide option being hidden or not (in OSX full screen mode achieved by clicking the green dot when LR is in window mode). In full screen mode using shift-F and with the menu bar hidden though that option (has nothing to do with the menu bar being hidden in general preferences) and in this case the green dot will NOT show up and it shouldn't.

Now I'm feeling guilty that folk are using good shooting time hunting for green dots :-(  For some reason the things that work for you folk don't work for me - sometimes. I'll try deleting prefs and doing the other Mac-type stuff you do short of reinstalling the OS and see if that clears things up!

Don't worry :) I'm at home and not loosing any shooting time. I will travel from next friday and I promise not to chase green dots, except that spring is here with lots of green :)
Anyway if I were you I would not start to delete prefs or anything and just use shift-F.
