Probably a dumb question but..
Can you create a session by adding files rather than copying them ie using files already where you want them in your folder structure? If so, how?
I guess this IS possible with catalogs.

In session mode you can open any supported file without the need to import it into the session. Just go to the system folder section in the Library panel, navigate to the desired folder and open the image.

If I do that, where do the settings files get put? (Guess I could try it and find out ... :-) )

C1 will create a folder with the settings file in the same location where you open the image. It will scan the entire content of the folder for images and create entries in the session database, somehow similar to Adobe Bridge's cache.

When you create a session it will create a folder structure where you tell it to add the session.
Capture Folder
Selects Folder
Output Folder
Trash Folder
In the Systems Folders area twiddle down to the folder where your images are.
Right click the folder with your images and select "Set as Capture folder"
C1 will ask you "Do you want to remember the previous Capture Folder in the Favorites"
Answer the way that works for you.
You will see a camera icon next to the folder name.
You should right click this folder again and select Add to Favorites. Then it will show up in the favorites list.
The images in your new Capture Folder will be added to the session without import and that is were everything will be stored.
BTW, only folders in the Favorites will be searchable etc.
