Title: Let's see your pets
Post by: MattBurt on April 11, 2017, 01:56:12 pm
Hopefully this isn't too whimsical for this place. I think pet photos when done well can be very engaging and maybe even artistic.
So let's see 'em! Not the snapshots so much as the photographs.

Here's a new one from this morning of my dog Luna. She joins me on a lot of landscape shoots and (usually) makes the experience even nicer.

I also have a cat that can be pretty photogenic. She doesn't wind up in as many as the dog but finds her way into my photos at least every couple of weeks, one way or another.

Sweet looking dog, that Luna.

Thanks. She is very sweet with us but takes a little time to warm up to strangers. She worries too much!

Those are both great. That's the kind of thing I'm hoping to see here.
That's Astro. She almost always looks surprised. :)

I may have posted this somewhere before, if so my apologies. These are our two Norwegian Elkhounds. At the time of the photo they were about 2 and 9. this was completely unposed, they were both asleep at my feet. Thank goodness the iPhone was nearby!!

So it seems :-)

This is VC (Visitor Cat). He just turned up, first as a visitor, then decided to stay.

Sorry to hear about Jake! My condolences.

This is a good photo and the kind of thing I was hoping to see more of in this thread.

Snapshots have their place but I'd much rather see photos with attention paid to composition, lighting, dof, and anything else that contributes to a great looking shot. Like we do with our more serious shots but including our (or anyone's) pets.

One thing I really like is getting white on white shots with Luna. She looks great in the snow for a high key shot. I may not have a chance to get more of these kinds of shots for months now so here are a couple of my favorites from this past winter.

That's a very nice photo! Was it staged or did you just get lucky with the pose? I imagine setting up such a shot would be a lot like herding cats!

Were they not allowed before? I'd say it's ok by me but don't confuse me for someone in charge!
My hope for this thread was avoid the snapshot style phone pics and have us post pet pictures that you have put effort into to get the best results.

Thanks. Just luck. I had just received my 70-200 lens, and went outdoors to take some test shots. I turned around and there were my three cats watching me. The rest is history.

How about a couple of black dogs to even things out?  ;)

Tiki is first, caught her on a rock wall during one of our hikes.

Cola is next. She is busy keeping the world safe from the rock chuck menace.

That shot of Hamish (the orange cat near the top of this thread) is from my Samsung phone. I don't think I could have gotten the shot with any other camera.

I believe it was Michael Reichman himself who initially "banned" cat photos, but even he never enforced the ban.
I posted at least one cat photo back then and it wasn't removed.

Well this thread is still alive!

I think if this thread is a place to put and discuss pet photos that were taken with care and maybe some discussion about how to achieve good ones or make them better, it might be a good contribution to the community here.
I didn't put any effort into pet shots this weekend so I have no new images to share today. Maybe tomorrow...

It takes time.  Everyone grieves differently. We lost our dog on 28 July.  Within a week, my wife was ready to replace her, but I was still grieving.  I am glad you are giving your wife time for her grief.

Dogs are not like a family member, they are a family member.

I love my cats too but find living in the mountains tends to make their lives shorter, at least around here. Foxes, coyotes, and the occasional big cat are never far.

Our cat Hugo (formally, the Baron Hudo van der Lyonne) graced our lives with his presence for some 17 years in the 1960s through 1980s. Artist's model, musician, and bon vivant, his image was one of only two non-human nudes in the exhibit of about 100 prints that Minor White chose for "Being Without Clothes" at M.I.T.'s Hayden Gallery in 1970 (also published as an Aperture book.)

While my wife and I were out at dinner celebrating our wedding anniversary, Hugo escaped and apparently was struck by a car. resulting in a badly broken leg.
After surgery and two weeks in the hospital, he was allowed home, wearing a splint on the bad leg.

The first day he could move around freely, he let us know that he wanted to go out. Our apartment was on the second floor. If we had let him out this door to our back porch, he had intended to jump down onto the roof of the garage, and from there onto the first floor porch and onto the ground to explore.

We, the cruel humans, refused to open the door for him. He lived many happy years thereafter.

Here is the biggest of our dogs, a Swiss white shepherd called Ada. I was test shooting my new D4 5 years ago, testing the continuous AF.

We also have 3 cats and a total of 2 to 6 dogs depending on how many dogs our daughters bring us for weekend care. Besides a white shepherd pictured, a papillon (she is the alpha bitch, at 7 lb.), great poodle, Portuguese waterdog, Dutch shepherd and a mean looking mixture of Dutch shepherd and German shepherd (presumably).

The late, great and much lamented Clyde, Fridge Raider Extraordinaire, doing his Lion King impression. Bengals do have a certain presence ...

He died three years ago today and is still sorely missed. Perhaps this will serve as a suitable memorial.

We have a Bengal and they are nice cats.  In many ways more dog like than cat like.

Unfortunately, ours likes to talk... a lot... loudly... at 0200.  Not fun.

But she is a good cat, although my opinion often changes at about 0201.

I am sorry for your loss.

Clyde is beautiful! Cats are wonderful creatures. Here's another Lion King impression...

Not my pet, Emilio belongs to no one, but hangs out at the climbers hut at Frey Valley in Argentina in northern Patagonia. I was climbing there some years ago and stopped on a ledge for a break and was stunned to suddenly hear a cat meowing from about 30 ft. above me. At this point I was several hundred feet up the side of Aguja Frey. He casually worked his way down a series of ledges and then surveyed the scene below while I snapped some shots.

Just to try to balance up for the dogs may I show my "shadow" lying beside my desk waiting for the next thing to happen.

He is called Hugo, follows me everywhere, sleeps by the bed ... and just to show what the breed should be like when recently he met a young 4-year old girl for the first time he just sat beside me and let her crawl all over him without demur and then licked her hand.

Thank you Bob. I don't really try for a particular style but it's good to know I have one. :)

Here's Luna again. She and my son came out to shoot last night and we got a nice sunset to top off a fun evening. She's waiting for her reward for standing still.

In Florida, the gators, birds, bugs, and swamps never cease to amaze me. I love the scenery here. Too bad most folks associate Florida with water (well it is a peninsula), theme parks, Miami, and retirement communities.

Are you familiar with Clyde Butcher's work? He is a master of B & W Florida landscapes. I met him a few weeks ago while I was at the camera store in Bradenton (Johnson's Photo Imaging). I say "the camera store" because it is the best brick and mortar photo store on either side of the peninsula. I'm sure Miami has some top-notch photo stores.

More swirly Helios bokeh and Luna this morning.
Also, a little tech talk about a feature I love in Pentax cameras (maybe others too?) called Catch In Focus where the shutter will not fire unless you have focus lock. For manual focus lenses and moving subjects it's really a huge help. I've been practicing with it lately and I think it's one of my favorite modern conveniences. I can get a better hit rate than with focus peaking for shots like this one. I'd like to try it with stage lights at a concert sometime for some surreal effects.

Beautiful, Rob.

Thanks, Eric.

That was the only period that Ann had short hair.

When I met her in school she had a "Veronica Lake" style, and I think the short cut was a sort of reaction, a spiritual clearing of the decks for the wedding and then the period during which our daughter came along. After that, the decks stayed clean as ever, but the tresses were allowed to grow, thank goodness!

Seventeen years later, both ladies had the same long hair, and you couldn't tell who was driving the car - until it came up the drive and so did the soundtrack. Ann didn't like music when she drove.

Them wuz the days...

We did have a dog at the time, a small fox-like creature that lasted fourteen years and climbed the laurel bushes after sticks I'd throw. Not a fib, a fact. My daughter has some snaps...

Funny thing: though the little pooch lasted all that time, the memories are all of the next one, the big Alsabrador we brought out to Spain with us. The small dog was independent as a cat; the big one was like a child and wouldn't dream of letting us out of sight.

Luna waiting for the moon to come up with me the other night.
I usually leave her off leash while shooting in reasonably remote places and she does well just sniffing around while I shoot and coming back to pose for treats as she feels like it. One thing we are working on is not chasing wildlife. So when she started to chase a deer while I was shooting and I called her, it was really nice to have her actually leave the deer and return to me pretty promptly. Progress!

Hamish, the larger of the two, is the gentle giant.  He outweighs Nigel by a factor of two.  That doesn't stop Nigel from raising hell every chance he gets. :)

When I was growing up, my next-door neighbour had a cat named "Rooster". After that just about any pet name seems reasonable to me...
It was amusing when they called the cat in for its dinner.

I have a great model. We had another session by the creek last night.  8)
She wasn't being quite as attentive this time because the cows across the creek were mooing a lot.

Thanks, Eric. ... I stopped taking studio portraits of dogs when I became disabled about four years ago. Of all the types of photography I've done as a pro and as an enthusiast, I enjoyed photographing dogs more than anything. The real trick to getting good studio photos of pet dogs is knowing how to manage a dog's human.

That's what I have often suspected.

Neither my moggy nor my wheels - were it my wheels Moggie'd be long gone.

Usually, instead of cats on top, we get rats under the hood; they chew cables and leave piles of mess on top of the battery.

That's why we never got another dog.

I thought about it once or twice after I lost my wife, but realised it wouldn't be fair for the dog;  they need more energy than I have to give. I wouldn't go for a small one, so lots of exercise is obligatory, and I never walk for more than about an hour-and-a half a day. When we had the last one, an Alsabrador, she got that twice a day, plus swimming in the sea a few times a week. I couldn't take another heartbreak, but the reality is that a dog would probably outlast me, then what for the pooch - the vet?

Nice dogs, must be expensive to feed!

Looking at the vase of flowers reminded me of home, here, where the water is so hard that the use of such vases quickly turns them ugly because of the rapid build-up of scale on the glass. Who would have imagined? It was one of the reasons I abandoned my brief trip into running a darkroom here after installing air-con, building benches and having plumbing installed. Yeah, I know, I tried filtration and it couldn't cope with the grit.

:-(

Rob

P.S.

My mother also had a mania for collecting angels and cherubs.

Rob,
Love your cat on the car!  It is finally cold enough in my neck of the woods to have a fire. It is really stange not having my animal companion sitting in front of the stove with me.  Someday I'll get another rescue cat, but for now I like not having to find a pet sitter for when I'm away.

Well guys, as much as I hate to bring the room down I just figured this was a good place to post this. You may remember the photo below of my two guys sleeping on the living room floor. Well on Wed. afternoon they were both sleeping here again but this time the older guy (Jake, on the left) woke with a start, gave some God awful yelps and started to have convulsions on the floor. He then lost control of his bodily functions and started drooling. We rushed him to our Vet but we all knew what the outcome was going to be. So at around 4PM he joined our other guys at the Rainbow Bridge.  My wife & I are just devastated over this..

Being present for the final exhale of our companions is a steep price each of us would gladly tender if given the choice even accompanied by the knowledge of the future in return for the constant inexplicable capacity for genuine love, joy and good health both mental and physical they bring to ours. Each time I have rashly said "I am unable to ever do this again", their bounding good spirit has demanded otherwise for the lives we have shared. We don't experience this life living in a safe dark armoire, but thankful they have taught me the alternatives by their ever present grace~They chose to share life with you, and I wish for you the consolation  of all the wonderful years you shared.

Well guys, here's a shot of one of the litter from a couple of days back. They're starting to look a bit more like dogs now, must be that Nova Scotia fresh air & sunshine!! The breeder has been such a wonderful person to deal with, she's been very kind to us and very empathic. I don't want to get too commercial here, but if anyone is ever looking for this breed of dog please PM me for more information.

Our first Elkhound was so gentle, if you tossed him a single Cheeto he would turn his head away as if he was afraid of it and then pick it up and carry it off to the next room to eat it :)

Even though these dogs aren't mine, they and another not seen here belong to my closest friend.

This is Augie, a Spinone Italiano. They are generally used as gun dogs but not this guy. Here he is about 8 months old.

And here he is a few years later with one of his housemates, a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog named Titan, according to my friend this was not posed. Bear in mind that this is a really large sofa and there is another Spinone who is not in the picture!!

Good catch Slo!  I bet the dark brindle one on the right can really be intimidating if needs must, but as in most cases, they are probably the best cuddlers!  :)

Our cat likes joining my wife and I for walks outside, where she follows us around like a dog. She's happy to hang outside by herself too. Fortunately the apartment complex in which we live here in South Bend, Indiana has a wooded area. When she is running at top speed, it's not easy to photograph her! Until I saw her in the snow, I didn't appreciate how effective her camouflage was. She's from Tajikistan, which is a small country north of Afghanistan.

LOVE those action shots! Cute kitty too. I used to have a cat that would do this with us and our dog. Cats are so funny.

Yes, the principle is called 'counter-shading' and is employed by military camouflagers all the time!
We have a cat that has a similar fur coat to your beauty, but we live in a place that is sub-tropical, yet that cat can also disappear in plain sight in our garden full of deep green tropical shrubbery...

Well guys, the time is getting closer to the arrival of our new elkhound puppy. It looks to be either late March or early April. In the meantime, the breeder has sent along a shot of the one that will be ours. It's a male and will be called Ralphie (After The Kid In A Christmas Story)

Damon, the shots of your cat are just outstanding!! Very well seen and captured.

And here's a shot of the litter, I imagine it's well nigh impossible to get a shot where they are all standing still :)

Very exciting about your puppy! They sure are cute!

Here's Luna and Frida who are getting along much better than they used to. We think Frida came from kind of a rough situation before we adopted her so she was a little reluctant to trust Luna for a couple of months. Now they hang out, play, and sometimes even nap together. Pretty sweet!

Here's a shot with Luna that I wish I had taken from a little lower angle or Luna was a little farther back so she would stand out against the water. But I still like it. She saw me setting up a shot and decided to strike a pose just in case. I couldn't resist!

Out for a walk and shoot last night with Luna. She got all nervous and started sounding the alarm at things like a pile of rocks. Maybe she could smell or sense some predators around but I never saw anything. Nice calm evening after a very windy afternoon.

Hi Dave, I know just how you feel, I don't know what it is about our pets that makes their loss so keenly felt.

Matt, I expect that Luna did indeed sense or smell something that alarmed her, perhaps the winds uncovered something that she then could smell?

Definitely possible.
We have coyotes, bobcats, and lions around.
There are definitely smelly things here too as Luna rolled on a dead skunk carcass while my wife was walking her along the creek a couple of days ago.  :o

Rob, I bet the vet & food bills are pretty low!! I read somewhere that the "average" cost to own dog over it's lifetime is around 16 thousand bucks. There's an animal emergency center near us, it's basically a level one trauma center for pets. We had to bring one of our guys in once and it was just heartbreaking to see how many people could simply not afford the $$ of the treatments and had to either walk away or have their pets put down. I always swore that if I ever came into big bucks (lotto, etc.) that I would sponsor a fund to spare people this horrible choice!!

Yes, it can cost a lot of money. Our last dog had two separate cancer ops. with each consisting of the removal of a complete side of mammary glands. She survived for quite a while, between ops, but eventually it spread elsewhere and nothing could be done. She died across my lap on the kitchen floor, the vet telling me, as she withdrew the syringe, that tears are not unusual. We never had another animal, not because of cost but because of heartbreak. Twice is more than enough.

But on the cost aspect, yes, not only vet fees, but also kennels when, as in our case, business travel still meant several weeks at a time away from base several times a year.

But the love of a large dog is something special.

We've been very fortunate in that the neighborhood people are all pretty close and since many of us have pets, we all serve as pet minders when someone goes away. I expect that it's saved untold $$ in kennel fees as well as being a win-win for the pets and the owners.

I used a Helios 44k-4 (58/2) on my K-1ii to get this shot of Luna yesterday. I like to play with vintage lenses sometimes.
For a shot like this, the Catch-in-focus feature was a huge help with the dog moving and no AF.

This is Nando our three legged rescue from Taiwan. His leg rear leg was caught in a Gin trap after his owner passed away leaving him as a stray. It was amputated at the hip. That hasn’t slowed him down much, he’s still pretty quick! We picked him up at SFO from a rescue group. He’s such a sweet dog. He’s now become infatuated with squirrels which is why his gaze is off camera and focused on the fence where the squirrels roam.

Shot with a Nikon F100 on Fuji Pro 400 at an EI of 200. Developed at home.

I recently won a local photo contest that was a fund raiser for the local shelter. Our dog and cat both came from the shelter and I like to help them out when I can.
The photo is of Luna (surprise surprise) when my wife and I took a day trip down there to hike this winter while waiting for snow to ski close to home.
There was a backpacker on a distant dune setting up his camp and Luna was fascinated.

Thea discovered the cat pot. She's new to our house. It took her a few months to finally discover this place. Previous cats have loved hiding in here. I shot this with a tele from a catwalk above. (NPI)

I know you all have seen the shot of our Jake & Louie laying on the floor with their heads touching. That one was taken after we'd had the, then newcomer, Louie, about a year. Well this one presented itself last evening, we have had the new guy, Ralphie for about 3 weeks. My wife & I were moved to tears when we saw this....

I don't know about you but I don't have any of those kind of pets.
So here's Luna emulating a pose you might see from the other kind of pet. Of course she is a bit furrier than those pets, especially around the undercarriage but we prefer the natural look anyway.

Matt, Patrick Lichfield shot a calendar in Moscow that wasn't a million miles away from Luna's concept of posing. I seem to remember it as having been for Unipart. He did a long series of calendars for that company.

I agree on natural fur; just as nature intended. Better than having to wear dark glasses.

I couldn't see it earlier either. I'll keep that in mind so both Luna and Frida can bother me while I take landscape photos. :)

Here's a recent shot of Luna checking out some playground equipment at a local park. She turned four a few days ago but still acts like a puppy a lot of the time.

'Morning all. Once again here's the boys doing what they do best, hanging about. Our little guy Ralphie has started teething. This is evidenced by the little teeth we keep stepping on in our bare feet around the house. Some of the ones that are coming in would not be out of place on a T-Rex!!

Luna looks like she's really enjoying that tube!! FWIW, I was not able to see your original photo either Slobodan, it is indeed very cool!

I snapped this one last night. Shutter speed was a little low so I'm hoping we can coax her into more of this for a better shot. She is chasing a pinecone in the yard.
I went with the retro film look as it seems to go with the flawed shot.

I took a new lens out with Luna for a walk the other day.
The lens is one of those oddball Pentax primes, a 43mm f/1.9. A late film-era lens with screw drive AF.
Seems pretty nice for portraiture. Luna was a willing subject as long as the treats kept coming.

Last weekend, after several weeks of gradual decline, my wife's first pet, Stella, was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma - it's essentially untreatable, and generally results in massive internal bleeding and a host of other very traumatic issues for the dog in very short order, so we took her home and made the decision to say goodbye to her tomorrow.  She's 15 (Stella, not my wife ;)  ) though, so she's had a really good run, and this is the kind of dog that would much rather stop wasting away and move on to whatever comes next than go out in confused agony in week or two anyway.  We spent yesterday taking some pictures of her, and I want to share them.  Thanks for taking a second and looking.

I really appreciate that - it's pretty brutal, and certainly more so for my wife than me.  This was her pup from her first years on her own - Stella was a street dog that my wife took in and they sort of became "adults' together.

A couple of cats, then: the one in the fur coat remained very coy and wouldn't tell me a thing, not even her name; the other one is called Denise, and we met at Heathrow Airport. So much for security - could have fogged my Kodachrome.

Has anyone else noted the common currency that seems to exist between pretty creatures on their backs and fur coats?

For the vets: Nikon F or F2 with Nikkor 2.8/35mm.

The carpet's a bit the worse for wear, but the pooch would probably chew a new one up anyway.

I filled some holes today, left by a heater I removed from the bedroom wall. The paint - marfil arenal - has faded a delightful shade of pale over the years, and the filler is maximum white.

Shows you how useless is Photoshop in real life: I actually need to buy some paint!

Out for a 7 hour walk with my wife and me.
7 hours? Man, don't tell my three boys. They get 1.5 hours in the morning and maybe an hour in the afternoon.
They are also off leash and in a very open area where they can run like crazy but I suspect IF I could ask them, they'd want more than 2.5 hours per day; I'm too old for that!

Not every walk is that long, in fact most aren't. We were climbing a nearby peak (12,631' Mt. Gothic) and the clear skies allowed us to take our time. She's a strong hiker and has gradually worked up to these long high altitude ones. Then we take it easy for a day or two after so we can all recover.

This one's name is Dexter, an egyptian mau - siamese mix, I think. Beautiful coat on a lean, big cat. As you can see, Dexter is also a street fighter, but an extremely lovable and very vocal cat. He roams the neighborhood always seeking a human companion. (Not mine btw.)

This little fawn appears to be an orphan and has been hanging around the neighborhood for a couple of months now. She seems to have adopted us despite Luna (the dog) not being very welcoming and spends much of her time in the yard sleeping, eating the weeds (yay!). Frida (the cat) seems to like her and even hangs out with her outside sometimes. I'm hoping for a good outside shot but for now these through the window ones are pretty easy and fun. Hopefully this little deer survives the winter and doesn't attract any lions!

I guess there isn't a real Dognip, analogous to Catnip.

Here's the real dope on Catnip (highly recommended):

We give Luna "Chill Pills" from the pet store. They have hemp and some other herbs but nothing heavy. They work pretty well when she gets anxious and just take the edge off.
A nice walk helps too.

When I first got married, we had a fascinating cat named Hugo.
On our first anniversary we went out to dinner, and came back to find Hugo under the downstairs porch of our apartment (we had the second floor.)

He had apparently been hit by a car crossing the street, so we rushed him to the animal hospital. They operated on him, inserting pins to rebuild his broken leg bones, and after a few days he came home with a bag brace on the broken leg. As soon as he had energy enough to get out of the carton we had for his bed, he dragged himself to the back door, asking to go out onto our second-floor porch, from which his habit had been to jump down to the roof of the garage on the first floor, and from there to the ground.

Here he is, wondering why we won't open the door.

Nice juxtaposition. The birdhouse has a "spot" right in the same place as the cat (except it's a hole in the birdhouse.)

I suspect the birdhouse in one of cat's favorite hangouts.

Luna and I celebrated the first week of summer with some backcountry skiing yesterday. Still so much snow left at altitude! We have hiked this route this time of year with little or no snow and this year there was too much to even drive all the way to the trailhead.
Luna was thrilled to spend the day playing on it.

Walking in the park this morning. Our pair of cross Ridgebacks. The one in front is still a puppy. All 35kg of her. She is half Ridgeback and half Boerboel. Occasionally Boerboels get close to 100kg so she is not big by those standards.

Thanks for the concern. :)
She had to take a month off of off-leash walks this winter because she strained her shoulder getting all crazy in deep snow.
If I have to keep her on the leash, I need to choose between dog walking and photography so for that month those activities were happening separately.
But now she is back to her old self and can run around while I shoot again which I think we both appreciate.

Here are Owen (border collie in the lead) and Wyatt (aussie behind) working at the dog gym.  Wyatt is a special case - he's a rescue and had never been properly socialized, and we got him, he couldn't even go out in public due to fear issues.  Still a way to go, but he's made huge improvements :)

Thanks! She had some tough times this summer with having a growth (like a wart) removed from the corner of her eye and then not long after she bolted out the door after a fox and cut herself on something and had to get stitches. All that after her strained shoulder from punchy snow this spring but now she is ready to rally!
I bet she would like agility training. We have not tried it formally but she definitely gets some along the way on our adventures.

Your pups seems to be enjoying that very much. They look very happy and healthy!

It's been a while since I made a post...Very busy making paintings. Covid-d has been very good at keeping me home and in the studio. I always have had a good studio work ethic. But now no one calls and asks can we meet up. This is our two-year-old Bebe. She has about had it with this Covid thing. ; )

Does she ever wear boots or anything? I know dogs have built-in "pad heaters" to some extent - just wondering if she needs anything else or if she's good to go as is?

I agree!

No she doesn't. She seems to be genetically well equipped for this. She does get too hot in the summer sometimes so that is when I need to be more careful I think. She will also get cold when it's really cold out (well below zero) but on just about any day I would go out she will be fine and thrilled to be there.
Our previous dog used to get snow clumps pretty badly in her paws and also on her belly but Luna just naturally sheds snow.
I have a feeling she would not like booties. We tried them on our previous dog who was much mellower and she didn't like them either. Luna hates stuff on her like that. The cone of shame is her worst nightmare (or second worst after just being at the vet).

Luna refuses to get on any ice that isn't covered in a layer of snow. Even then if it makes any of those eerie ice noises she's out! Then she just barks at me from the shore.

Is Luna saying "Anybody want to go in for a dip with me?"

Definitely not! Luna will wade when it's warm but she is not a swimmer unless forced. She likes to keep her paws dry in the winter too.

What she did here is I was shooting away with my tripod and waiting for light and she was getting bored. So she came and posed for me all on her own in front of my subject. As soon as she hears the click of the shutter, she demands compensation. It reminds me of traveling in third world countries, lol.

The Great Sand Dunes (at least the ones near the border of NM) are cool, but no comparison to White Sands in size and awesomeness. But you don't want to go there in the summer and in fact, Winter is ideal for the afternoon.

Thanks! She does kind of float once she gets wound up which she was here. This snow is on a frozen pond and the flat wide open space with snow is one of her favorite conditions. Without the snow coating she refuses to set foot on the ice.

Well done, perfect timing.

Thanks! Yeah if you can't tell there is a ridge behind her and the sun is behind and above that. So we get the shadowy background and illuminating backlight on Luna. I like this trick for people photos too but it works especially well on a white dog. :)

Luna is an incredibly photogenic dog.

She is my muse and a lovable pain in the butt.

Maybe also tired of the heat and waiting for the snow?
Another great portrait of Luna!

Thanks.
Probably that too! But she really hates thunderstorms, fireworks, gunshots, or anything that sounds like those things.
Her anxiety is increasing as she ages too. But some snow would surely cheer her up!

Yes, my experience is that explosions (whatever the source) are scary for dogs. During thunderstorms or fireworks, my dog used to go under a large cabinet, as deep as possible.

It's a good hike! There is an old helicopter wreck down there that is interesting to check out. We also found some ice way down there in the canyon but it's not suitable for skating. Sometimes these deep canyons have amazing patches of smooth ice in them but not this one this year! The following morning I found some that was skatable right next to the town of Crested Butte! Just barely thick enough...

and then went XC skiing up a little higher where the snow is sticking around.

I was just traveling for 9 days and Luna sure was happy to see me when I returned! It was fun for me too and I'm happy to resume the regular walk schedule with her. This is just a phone snap but I felt like it worked pretty well with a little cropping. We were on a frozen pond which Luna is ok with once the ice is covered by snow and not making those spooky noises the bigger ice sheets make.

Experimenting with affordable frames on the cat (spray painted Home Depot corner moulding, foam core, cheap white mat (frame is too thin, needs more meat, but the wife is happy since it has the cat in it))

Thanks! Not IR but the light and changing leaves made them very bright compared to everything else so I accentuated that in post a little more.
Luna is a wader but does not like to swim. So she happily did some wading. :)

She did! It's the highlight of most outings.

Does Luna like to look at her portraits ?

She has zero interest! Although she'd probably pretend to look at them for some more treats.
