Perhaps it is just a natural progression and the site can no longer be maintained but a shame as it was a useful resource. I hope things are OK for Mr Lindbloom

A VERY useful resource. I hope Bruce is ok. I am sure there are many people here who would be willing to host the material if a way could be found to contact the rightful owner.

Hi Tony,
That's too bad. It was a very useful resource. The 'Wayback machine' site has some of the (older) pages stored, in case you're looking for something specific.

That link leads to a little poem saying it's all gone.
But the resource Bart mentioned is incredible. Just went there. It is useful up to March 17 of this year. When you click on that date there will be a "Not found" message. Don't stop there. Click on one of the tabs under the Bruce Lindbloom title and it all comes up. Fantastic!

There's something funny going on here. I was using that site just last night via Google Chrome and it still works for me this morning using that browser. However if i use another browser it goes to that strange quote.

That really is strange because it hadn't worked for two friends of mine in the US since early this morning before this thread was started, nor for me here in Canada. Could it all be shenanigans of some kind? As you just said, perhaps "something funny going on" that is not so funny.

I thought of the browser cache but then dismissed it as many people have them set to empty with every close-out. But you have a point - could be. That would be nicer than a conspiracy theory, but still leaves open the question of "whither Bruce Lindbloom?"

Yes Bart, I think that's it. When I "open" the site, I can still use parts of the site that I used yesterday but others go to the strange quote.
So yes, whither Bruce. Perhaps his site has been hacked?

Many thanks I was looking for his excellent CIE Colour Calculator and had never used The Wayback machine and I am sorry to say the maths behind these calculations escapes me :'(
Thankfully the calculator is preserved here.
Talking about missing web sites are you going to be reviving your old web site anytime - lots of useful info there as well :D Of course some of your writings are now preserved on the Wayback.

Yes, I'm working on them (HTML5 and more Mobile/Tablet responsive, restyled a bit, updated where needed, and new pages).

It's back online, but not all the previous content is there. One thing missing that I found especially useful is the Companding Calculator. This was useful for finding density from L* values (and vice versa).

It works fine on Firefox, just tried it. In the archive version of the site the front page is blank, except for the menu buttons. Click any one of them and the content comes up. In the regular direct access to the site all works on the latest Firefox I'm using with OSX El Capitan.

It was probably down because Bruce revised the site. Look at the bottom left corner and you can see the site was revised on April 6. Perhaps the Java required applications were removed because of known Javascript vulnerabilities (that is just a conjecture).

You probably mean Java. Some of his apps required installing Java and Java has been vulnerable to malware forever. Few run it anymore unless they have to. I agree with your conjecture.
JavaScript is another animal that gets confused sometimes because of the name. Nearly everything on the web uses JavaScript as does Bruce currently.

I think this probably has to do with the fact that as of FireFox version 52 (released in March, 2017), Mozilla has completely removed support for the Java Plug-in. In fact all plug-ins using the NPAPI plug-in interface are no longer supported with one exception: Adobe Flash (see here (https://www.java.com/en/download/help/firefox_java.xml) for more info). So any site that uses Java Applets (like Bruce's) are effectively broken with FireFox 52 or later. (Note, if you are running the "Enterprise" ESR versions of Firefox, Java support is still enabled, at least for now. But Mozilla is strongly encouraging developers who have built web sites using Java applets to switch to newer more secure technologies).
In theory you should be able to use a different browser (e.g. Internet Explorer which still supports the Java plug-in) to access the web archive pages, however I just tried that with no success. The java applet starts to load but then reports "Class not found exception" for any of the calculators that are built using a Java applet. So in this case it seems even the web archive pages won't help. I suspect the web archive does not include all the files necessary to support the Java applets.
We can only hope that Bruce will consider updating the calculators to newer web technology to make them available again.
