Trying to get mt Aptus 22 to tether with my MBP.
Aptus 22
Firewire 400/800 cable plugged into camera
800 side plugged into FW800/Thunderbolt Adapter
Thunderbolt port on MBP.
No go :(
Aptus wont power on.
I also have a FW400 powered hub that I tried
FW400 from camera to hub
FW400/800 to adapter into Thunderbolt port
This way, the power light comes on the Aptus, but it doesnt seem to want to power on...
Am I doing something wrong?
Am I SOL?
Thanks, ad

Hi Adam, if you see a Yellow light and the fan comes on this means it's powered. For it to "come on" you'll need the right tethering software, either Leaf Capture or Capture One Pro, and the correct camera settings in the software. See screen grabs attached.

Yair,
can you recommend a powered hub?
If I plug the FW400/800 plug into the back, the light turns on for a moment...
If I use my powered 400 hub, nothing happens at all....
-
Try to check the fire wire power adaptor, it should be 12v DC and 3 Amp.
-
Looks like my issue may be the firewire port on the back.
I thought I could Use EyeFi for wireless, but the CF/SD adapter I bought doesnt seem to be recognized by the back. Anyone else using a CF/SD Adapter with an older back?

Hello,
If someone is interested, I'm selling a Unibrain glass optical fiber fw repeater new in box (http://forum.luminous-landscape.com/index.php?topic=117350.0). It's quite an expensive thing new at Unibrain (649$), but I guess it's the most stable fw repeater on the market. So when interested, please contact me. A good offer can be good enough ;)
Best regards,
sepp

My experience with running fiber-optics in a studio is that the cables don't like to be moved, I don't see how working with this hub solve anything. I would keep it simple and get a regular 800 hub with 12v and 3 amps.

Please tell me more about this regular hub 12 volt 3 amp. Would it work on location? Is there anything that can be used with batteries. I shoot architecture on location, sonI can't plug in most times. Thankso

I have a slightly different question. How can we tether this (and similar backs) to the new Macbook Pro Thunderbolt USB-C? Apple has a Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt USB-C adapter, but that would mean going through 2 different adapter (Firewire to Thunderbolt, Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt USB-C). Would that still work?

Better to start a new thread, much easier to find.

Check this one: https://www.digitalback.com/product/fw800-powered-hub/
CI also had a battery setup at one point - but I'm not seeing it. (It was pretty expensive)

Regarding tethering an Aptus 12 to a MacBook Pro.
I just set this up for the first time and it works, here is the setup in an attached photo using a Unibrain 3 port FW repeater. Previously I had used an older MacBook with FW that didn't require a repeater. The Unibrain has in input for 12VDC so you could use it with a battery in the field instead of connecting it to AC.
best wishes, Neil

ok, but this is for thunderbolt 2... for the macbook touch bar, with Thunderbolt 3, there's no FW to Thunderbolt 3 adapter...

So TB3 to TB2 & TB2 to FW800 "might" work (as in should but given how things get cut off...). Or go for a TB3 dock setup, like from OWC.
-
another possible solution (2 birds/1 stone): OWC (macsales.com) has a few storage drives that have FW ports -I use an older 1TB version...here's a link to a 4tb version:

I hook mine to my 2013 MacBook Pro through USB and it powers the Aptus 22 back. The power comes from the drive, not the computer. So, I'm guessing it'll work with an adapter to get into the Mac...
