Title: Catalog on external SSD

I've searched and I think I have my answer but want to confirm my thinking.

I work with LR on a MacBook Pro with a 256GB internal drive. I want to move my catalog to an external SSD because the catalog is now about 60GB and the drive is close to 90% full.

From what I've read here, that should present no problems. Is there something I'm missing??

I don't see any problem with that. You may choose to buy an SSD large enough to hold also the most recent photos you are working on so you don't have to have two external drives attached all the time.
The Samsung T1 (USB 3) and T3 (USB-C) 1TB are good options and very light.

Thanks, helpful (and fast!) reply. Another question: is there any advantage to getting a Thunderbolt SSD, given that I think they are generally more expensive?

I assume your MBP has USB 3.0 and in that case I would recommend the Samsung T1 because it is so small and light you can walk around with your MBP without unplugging the SSD drive. You can get the T1 in several sizes.

Thanks! Amazon says T1 discontinued. Assume T3 is replacement?

Yes, you can use the T3 instead.

I was using an external SSD for Lightroom. I ended up having to get a larger one due to all the previews and smart previews - they take up quite a lot of space. It worked well, and was significantly faster than using the internal hard drive I had at the time.

Are you shooting Jpegs? Apple Store sell a 1 TB drive for 89.00 it works great! I buy several drives for different categories of images Family, Trips...by name Yosemite ex. Never store any images on your MBPRO. I only shoot raw though so my needs might differ. 500 GB ssd internal 16 g on board (not enough) would like to have 32 or 64 g and 1TB SSD, the future is coming!
