Today I thought I would try something different ... and photograph a scene that obviously should have some depth of field in a manner that is totally out of focus. (The pole should be in focus and perhaps the building in the background not or vice versa.)
What I find interesting is that when I full screen'd it the first time, my brain tried to get my eyes to bring the image into focus but it didn't work. I'm curious if it is just my brain that does this (because there is memory of what it looks like with focus) or if it (brain tries to tell eyes to focus on something that they cannot) happens to other people too. Maybe it is because there's not an entire pole in the image, therefore telling the brain that it is "close"? (I do know how close I was ;)
This type of scene is somewhat distinct from being just a little bit out of focus - the entire image is effectively "bokeh".
Curious about the feedback of others.

I think that if you can make out any details, your brain tries to bring those details into focus.
But it simply looks as if you dropped your camera and it needs to go to the shop for repair.

Fascinating.
It makes me reach for my glasses, even if they are already on. That is very much the way the world looks when i don't have my glasses on.
As an image, it emphasizes the basic shapes of things rather than the details. I could imagine a series of these could be quite effective (and some would probably hate them.)

To what end?

Perhaps you could increase the sharpening or the clarity and see what the effect is?

To make these things work, I feel there has to be a very slim slice of sharpness. Maybe we all need to have a Noctilux as standard kit... I wish.

Well it makes for a far more interesting experiment with photography than the usual fare. Pixel peepers looking for sharpness would be utterly disappointed :)
