Title: Dunes "Death Valley"
Post by: tim wolcott on March 13, 2017, 10:46:34 pm
I live about three hours from Death Valley way up high in the mountains in SoCal.  Here are some the other day.  I will be going back for sure.  Right after the next storm.  Tim

I like the fourth the best, I suppose because the context is taken away by the absence of horizon. Just after a storm is the time to go, isn't it, when the sands are smooth. I envy you your proximity.

Nice images, Tim!  My favorite is the first, though I'd probably prefer a slightly less darkened sky.  A nice set of Images.

Beautiful images. I like the first tree shots, especially #1 and #3 with the great contrast provided by the jagged mountains vs the soft curves of the dunes.

A lovely set.
The fourth is also my favorite.

It's nice to see work of yours that doesn't include either trees or bright colors!

Thanks Eric glad you liked them.  I do shoot every subject matter in Nature.  But trees and trees with landscape sell very well.  Tim

I like the last one very much!

The blue definitely add someting interresting, but I would crop it slightly on the left to remove the darkest part.

That will improve the light balance.

Have a Nice Day.

Everything is a temptation when it comes to photography.  I do like the local of where I live.  4 hours to Utah, 3 hours to death valley,4-5 hours to backside of Sierra's.

Here are some other dunes.

Lovely shots.  You have inspired me to try some B&W conversions of my shots from there.  Any particular technique that are are using?  Contrast and sharp blacks really stand out.  BTW the last image you posted is my favorite - if I had to pick one.

No just capture one and shooting with the hardest shadows you can get.  Tim

Here's one I really like because its rarer to find and capture it.  Can't wait for the next wind storm to clean the dunes.  Will be back there next week with any luck.  Tim Wolcott

I love these.

Can you tell us which set of dunes you visit primarily? On my one visit to DV I had a great time at Stovepipe Wells. The problem there is that it is too easy for the tourists to leave footprints all over, unless you are there first thing after a good wind storm.

Eureka Dunes is highly recommended. Far fewer problems than what we see at Mesquite Dunes. Also, the Last Chance Range provides a spectacular setting.

Those were shot at stovepipe wells dunes.  your right the footprints can be very bad but I go there after the wind blows thru and make sure I'm the first in.  But Eureka been there more times than probably anybody and love that set of dunes.  Much more challenging but well worth the extra pain of walking so far to get the really good stuff.  Need to take lots drinks and little food, there you can shoot all day but at stovepipe you can't do that.  But eureka dunes are 900 feet taller.  I will be going there soon.  But the wildflowers are calling me now.

Thanks, Tim.

I hope to get to Eureka some day, and back to Stovepipe Wells, too.

These are beauties, as are your trees and wild flowers.
