Title: The Slowness of Sqaurespace
Post by: kevs on January 30, 2017, 12:02:04 pm
I have a half a dozen websites or so, and  I was thinking of converting to Squarspace for one or two. Only thing, I've been looking at several photographer sites, I've noticed the excruciating slowness of some photographer websites, I've been visiting. There seems to be some horrid slowness with Squarespace, what is up with that? Thanks.  I did speed test, and my  cable model upload is 26.00 Mbps, which is fast.

You had me excited for a moment there; I thought you were on about the Slowness of Shakespeare...

It all depends on how you set it up. My blog there was slow at first. It was fixed after talking to their support. I do not have complains about speed but there are other issues.

Uptime could be better. Latest I have is 2 hours downtime in the last 30 days. It is not the worst they did. As IT person I find it unacceptable.
Early on (couple years back) they had weird technical issues that were breaking content. Their support never admitted any wrongdoing even after I showed evidence and got to talk directly to their IT. Ultimately issue was resolved and did not happen again since.
Squarespace builtin analytics is puzzling and leave a lot to be desired.
Another issue is backup and export. You can export content in wordpress format but cannot export galleries, and some other content. I found it almost impossible leave them without major headache. Fortunately they introduced a new management system that works better than previous one, so I stayed with them.

Squarespace shines in content creating. It is very easy to create beautifully formatted pages and latest management system works very well.
Also they have easy way to develop custom site templates if you are into it.

Thanks Nite, good info. Their support claims this slowness is due to many things, for example, some people are loading up images too large... maybe I'll PM the sites I'm seeing that are slow and see if you see the same thing?

Ok, I just started my own trail site, and sure enough, it's crazy slow today, and my cable modem test at 27 Mbps, very fast.

Perplexing as their sites are elegant, nice, clean, good support, and lot of well known shooters, but almost every site I've seen with well known photographers and others load crazy slow. Don't get it.
