Title: What distortions are removed?
Post by: Onslow on January 15, 2017, 02:05:12 am
Hi all,
I've been following a post online and it's turning into a flame war. It concerns the Lens Corrections that LR/ACR applies when turned on. To the best of my knowledge,, they correct barrel and pincushion distortion. Are there any others they correct? Perspective distortion for instance is being claimed but I find that hard to believe.

Ah yes, forgot about vignetting...

Lens profiles can also correct more complex distortions too, eg the infamous moustache distortion on the Samyang 14mm.

In theory it could correct angular distortions that might appear like perspective distortion, but true perspective distortion is a different issue.

I'd guess that where any confusion arises is that within the lens correction panel in LR is also the perspective distortion correction controls. Although they a separate control that's not directly related to the corrections applied by a lens profile.

In the latest versions of LR such corrections are divided into two panels; there is the lens correction panel and the "Transform" panel. If you look at the controls provided, you can readily see what each set does. Within the Lens Correction panel there are two basic menus: one for implementing a lens profile, and the other being manual for making corrections manually without a profile. Between the two menus in the Lens Correction panel and all the functionality of the Transform panel, especially the new Upright tool which works wonders on skews or asymmetric perspective, we can now correct a great many issues that previously needed Photoshop, but no longer.

Not on the current perpetual version 6.5. All on Lens Corrections panel.

Thanks - I should have been clearer - I meant in the latest version of the CC subscription versions! (I don't use perpetual versions any longer; do you get all the latest skew corrections yet in the perpetual version?)

I don't think so, but it's nothing that I'm missing.

For a good bit of the photography I do, this kind of skew correction functionality is invaluable and it works very, very well. I had been urging the inclusion of such tools in LR, and while it took time (they had other priorities lined-up etc), I was most impressed with how comprehensively and expertly they designed and implemented it. This has much further eroded my need for using Photoshop, hence enhanced my workflow efficiency a lot. For those who need to make such corrections frequently, highly recommended.
