Title: Haven't got OSX.4 (Tiger)?
Post by: Rokcet Scientist on July 06, 2006, 08:59:40 am
If you haven't got OSX.4 (Tiger), Lightroom won't work. It's a Beta anyway, so I'm not really concerned. Also, I've got an excellent alternative: the combo PhotoMechanic/PS8/PL32/GC! Works extremely well for me. Recommended to all non-Tiger users.

Get 'm here:
PhotoMechanic (does RAW too) (http://www.camerabits.com/)
PhotoLine32 (for XP and OSX; does RAW too; shareware) (http://www.pl32.com/)
GraphicConverter (for OSX; does RAW too; shareware) (http://www.lemkesoft.com/en/index.htm)

Meantime, here's a demo of a new candidate Olympic discipline for your entertainment.

BTW: OSX.5 (Leopard) is due out end of August next.

Just a heads-up that Rokcet Scientist's linked video may not be appropriate for viewing at work or by younger viewers.

Also (and not to disqualify the software suggestions -- while I haven't used PhotoLine, those other two are great apps).. a single-user license for Tiger is only $129USD and offers a ton of great and useful features over 10.3. Buying licenses for those other three apps would run you ~$255USD.

Granted you're running non-beta software in the end, but considering you're now looking at moving between 3 apps instead of one, are $120 lighter in the wallet, and miss out on some of the tremendous tools Tiger brings to Our Kind, I have to say my vote goes to Tiger+Lightroom.

It will be announced at the WWDC in August but it won't be available at that time...

Photo Mechanic integrates the workflow so that it is almost as if you work with/in only one app.

True, Gabe. But older Macs can't make full use of Tiger's capabilities. So new (Intel)Macs are required. That ups the ante for me by a couple thousand.....!
And with Leopard announced, I think I'll get my new Macs not before Xmas.
So, until then, I'm quite happy with that 4 app combo!

Actually, my circa 1999 G4/450 runs Tiger quite happily. It also runs Photoshop CS2 just fine, as well as the Lightroom Beta. However, I'm going to upgrade the processor in the next couple weeks to a 2.0GHz G4. I'm spoiled by my 2.0GHz MacBook and by my dual 2.5GHz G5 at work.

To keep this on the topic of Lightroom, I've used it some, but not extensively. I just recently started playing with it more and I like what I see. My desktop Mac will never run Aperture, so I think that purchasing Lightroom may be in my future.
