I want a new photo blog.
I currently use Gallery (version 1.5.x), Joomla and a dicuss bot attached forum. This is way too cumbersome. Especially since it didn't quite break (it sort of bent) with the last update.
What do people use for their sites? Something like WordPress with a simple gallery component of some sort would be great.
I also need to figure out how to get all the old content out of Joomla.
Bah. Seems more like a winter project.

I'm using Movable Type to run my photography site (http://www.digiteyesed.com/). It's not in a blog format, but the template system is flexible enough that it easily could be.

If I can find a decent template (or make one) I think I'll run with wordpress. (Very similar to MT from what I can tell.) My preliminary tests look pretty good.
Now to find a light weight gallery component for it.

I've used a bunch of different programs so far.

Home-rolling gives the greatest control, but also requires the greatest technical and artistic effort. I rate this as too time consuming, and have generally abandoned the effort.
MoinMoin is extremely flexible, and I have a fondness for wikis. But setting it up is not for the non-technical, and I went through a bunch of various plugins before I decided on the current setup. Personalized design is a bit more tricky than with Gallery 2, but entirely possible.
Flickr is easy to use in many ways, but I don't generally feel comfortable with leaving my pictures in a space I don't actually control myself.
Gallery 2 is okay-ish, but I think there's something lacking. But pushing new images onto the web is easy, and I can add comments/descriptions on many levels. Presentation control is decent, and can be augmented by personalized design.

I went with WordPress and JAlbum. I need to create templates for both but I found a couple I like well enough to not have to rush that.
Jalbum creates it locally and then you have to upload the whole thing. There are plenty of programs that do this but it seems pretty painless. I should check out idImager's web creation tools.
The problem with using shared hosting is that you never know how much CPU you'll have. So I really like things that simplify that. Word press was shockingly slow, however, until I enabled the cache plugin. (Or maybe Dreamhost just fixed whatever was broken.)

I'd been using gallery 1.5. It was okay if frumpy. At least when you integrated it into Joomla it would use the Joomla template. So it was wasn't so frumpy. (Or at least no more frumpy than the rest of the site.)
But Gallery 2 is slow. Way too many features and way too slow.

I use the excellent and free PixelPost. You'll need web hosting that supports PHP and MySQL to run it, and the installation is fairly simple.

Besides being easy to install, it has an active and supportive community of users. Modifying a template is fairly easy, and there are more than the standard black on white themes if you need something a little flashier.

The template I am using is included in the installation. It is called Simple.

PixelPost is pretty interesting. I ended up going the word press route. And since more of my posts have been complaining about the NBA than pictures I guess that was probably best.

I use Blogger and the best way to easily add to it is by using ZOTO. It's robust and easy to use.

For some time I have been working on getting a blog (I'm not calling it a blog however) going - and have tried out many of the different blogging softwares. I found most to be too complicated to set up and so gave up. I stayed away from trying Wordpress - simply because it is the grand daddy and is toted as more of a publishing software - - - so I figured it would be the most involved and complicated to get going.
I finally broke down and gave Wordpress a try early this month and was pleasantly surprised to find that it was far easier to set up and customize than expected. I too prefer to host my own blog - instead of using one of the free blogging services that tie you in with other blogging websites. I'm not sure whether Wordpress is the best for a picture gallery type blog as I haven't tried that...

I'm using wordpress. (I need a new template.) Wordpress works fine for my combination of photos and rants.
