Okay, you large format people, please don't sneer too much while I ask for paper advice for hi-end output from my meager R800...
I like Archival Matte, but am interested in trying the recently-reviewed unshiney gloss papers... Anyone have any experience with them on an R800 or an R1800?
Hahnemühle seems to offer only an R1800 (not R800) ICC profile for Fine Art Pearl, Innova offers no profiles at all the R800 or R1800 series, which leaves only Crane Museo offering support for my printer.
Is there some other source I should check for profiles? (I'm not using a rip.) Anyone managed to use a R1800 profile for a R800? And lastly, any other paper you might suggest for getting the best fine art, reasonably archival output from my R800?
I'm printing from 35mm film scans, mostly color, but some Tri-X images also.

Hi,
The R800 is pigment printer so thats an important step for archival quality. Choose your paper carefully, perhaps avoiding OBA's.
Then get your printer / paper combination custom profiled. Then careful use of PS as appropriate should make the best use of your printer.

Since the R800 uses the same ink set as the R1800, I would guess the profiles for the R1800 should work on the R800. Several of the paper manufacturers are now providing profiles for their paper on R1800. While these won’t normally be as good as custom profiles generated for your specific printer, paper, set-up, etc., they should provide a good starting point.
As far as types of paper, several paper suppliers (e.g, InkJetArt.com) provide sample packs of assorted coated, uncoated, fine art, etc. I found it quite helpful to order several different ones and just try 'em out.

I own the R1800, and it is capable of producing excellent prints when configured properly with a custom profile. The R800 should be the same since it has the same print head and engine, just a narrower carriage. Their only significant limitation is maximum print size.

I've been using the wee R800 for years, and it does an excellent job. I've used R1800 profiles on it and they give similar results to the canned R800 profiles, but a little bit better in the dark greens / browns / yellows on prem glossy paper. Blocking and smearing in these colours are a common issue with this printer. However I get better results from a custom profile that was created by a chap on another forum, and tested by Outback - not their DryCreek profile. I had three other custom profiles made and they were rubbish, often exacerbating the smearing issue. Drop me an email and I'll be happy to share information!
I use Hahnemühle photo rag for B&W using their profile, and the results are excellent.

Does anyone know for sure what Hahnemühle recommends for R800/R1800 users to select in the printer driver for paper type for Hahnemühle Fine Art Pearl.
My first guess would be Matte - Heavyweight. However, the gloss optimizer is not an option with this setting. It would seem that since this paper can make use of the photo black ink that it could also make use of the gloss optimizer. The gloss optimizer might be desired to reduce bronzing.

I've used these settings with good results:
Set media type: „Velvet Fine Art“ or „Watercolor“ if Velvet Fine Art is not available. *For FineArt Pearl use „Premium Semi-Gloss Photo Paper“
Resolution: 1440dpi, Best Photo (depending on print driver)
High Speed: Off
Color Control: Off
