Title: It's A Sad Day AT Luminous-Landscape
Post by: Kevin Raber on May 19, 2016, 12:36:36 pm
It is with a very heavy heart that I must share sad news with our readers and the rest of the photographic community.  After an extended battle with cancer, the Founder of Luminous-Landscape, Michael Reichmann, has passed away.  He was surrounded by family and friends over the last few weeks.  He put up a valiant fight.  He passed late on May 18th at age 71.

A huge loss. I'm so sorry to hear this. I'm blessed to have been able to spend some time with this dear man, I will miss him.

Two snap's of Michael I've always cherished. The first is what I call "I'm so happy here I could just shit" with a classic expression on his face. The 2nd, Michael literally swimming with Piranhas, not phased by it, taking photo's.

Ah Jesus!! I am just in tears as I type this, had no idea Mike was ill. I was fortunate to have met and spoken with him a few times over the years and also to have gotten some very good advice from him on various matters.  This is a group shoot taken at a dinner he hosted at Ruby Foo's in NYC some years back, yours truly is in between Thomas Knoll and Chris Sanderson, it was one of the most memorable days of my life!

A huge loss for us all. Not only for LuLa readers, but for photographic community as a whole.

Even though I lost several close family members like that, and knew all too well what Michael was dealing with, I still somehow hoped...

To those sharing photos of Michael here: thank you. Please keep them coming.

I always regarded Michael Reichmann as great person, a great artist, a great teacher but also as a distant friend. Very sad to hear he is now longer with us.

This news is so sad. Without Michael's inspiration and LuLa I would never have been able to embrace the digital revolution. After fifty years in the wet darkroom, I would have just given up photography altogether.

My deepest sympathy to his family and close friends. He was a gentleman, a fine teacher, and inspiration to so many of us. Rest in peace, Michael.

Let us all try to keep his generous spirit alive through this community.

I'm mostly a lurker around LuLa, but I can say without a doubt that this site and Michael's dedication to it have made me a better photographer. There are plenty of photographic sites around the web but very few that I check daily. This is one of them. I was hooked from the very early days and really enjoyed Michael's photographs and commentary. While I will truly miss his contributions, I'm so glad that the site will continue in the capable hands of Chris, Kevin and the rest of the LuLa team.

My thoughts and prayers are with Michael's family, the LuLa team and the many, many photographers that were as inspired as I was by Michael's work. May you find some comfort any time you see a luminous landscape before you.

Godspeed and great light to you, Mr. Reichmann.

when i started with digital photography a few years ago LuLa was one of the first sites that really educated me about photography.

i remember reading about ETTR on this website for the first time and thought "yeah.. that makes sense".

after i saw his videos about printing, matting and framing i was buying my epson r2880.

i never met him or talked to him but he truly influenced me as a photographer via this great website.

rest in peace michael.
my thoughts are with his family.

Michael was a gifted photographer and an eloquent teacher. Even though I never met him, I feel like I got to know him and his friends at least a little through the videos he and Chris created. I don't think there is anyone else in the industry who influenced me more on both a technical level and an aesthetic level than him.

Michael is someone I will never forget. His creation, LuLa, has been a gift to all of us for as long as I can remember. I look forward to many more years of LuLa under the stewardship of Kevin and Chris—but it won't be quite the same.

I never met Michael.  We had some small contact via PM.  I bought one of his prints, early on.  Lovely thing.  His "personality" here on the Luminous-Landscape was dignified, intelligent yet avuncular all at the same time.  He was "a friend I never met in person."

His vision and passion for photography, and early vision for digital photography, has had a significant impact on me on a bunch of levels.  He helped me "make contact" with the likes of Jeff Schewe and Eric Chan (via the tutorials).  He "allowed me" to "sit in the corner" and listen and learn from all the experts here on the site that have brought massive leaps in my understanding and ability.

It is his personal stamp on this "place," the hallmark, of civility as a defining characteristic... Long may that live.

Sad day... Thank you, Michael ...

Rand

Michael RIP, you were a great inspiration to many people. You were a big reason for me to be fond of landscape photography early on and I met you back in 2008 on a workshop in Canada. I was then planning to start my business and you spent more than an hour with me in your Toronto gallery discussing landscape photography, workshops and giving great advice. You will forever be missed for what you contributed to the photographic community during the transition from film to digital.

I knew you were ill or had been and thought all was better so this news was a shock and a big reminder to not waste our time while we are here on earth and pursue our dreams. I'm forever thankful to you.

I've added a few short words on my own memories of Michael here (http://www.snowhenge.net/pblog/article/michael_reichmann_rip).  Not easy to write.  It certainly brings back the memories....   In particular I remember being in the passenger seat of the car Michael was driving, in Iceland in 2004. He was in a hurry to get moving again, and was about to shoot off, when I asked him if he'd forgotten anything. He asked me, slightly irritated, what I meant, and I just pointed at his Contax 645, on his tripod, on the road behind the car.  I promised not to mention it....too often.

My condolences to Chris, Kevin, the whole Lula team, and most of all his family.  He's going to be missed the world over.

I've been following this site (Michael) from just after it's beginning.

I've not posted much but have enjoyed and respected his outstanding contribution to the Photographic and Humanitarian world. His humor and knowledge has been at my side since what seems like forever.

I never had the chance to meet but we did exchange a few emails over the years.

My heart does go out to the family and friends.

We are all the richer for Michael's life. We must celebrate that as well as wiping the tears from his passing.

Sad news indeed.  As I knew Michael only through this site, I will mention two things he did that have made The Luminous Landscape so appealing and valuable to me. The initial attraction was seeing his wonderful landscape photos on the front page, rather than photos of gear or such. Then, in the era when digital technology was evolving rapidly and changing photography, there was his writing about cameras: from the practical perspective of a skilled and widely experienced photographer using the gear to produce those wonderful images, with fine observations of ergonomics and such. He observed things about my own cameras that I had not noticed, but were worth knowing!

He will be missed by many.

Rest in peace

Chris and I are feeling the loss of our friend.  We will work harder than ever as we promised Michael to continue his legacy with Luminous-Landscape and the Endowment.

I'm one of those who knew Michael only virtually — through his articles, forum posts and videos on this website — but I greatly appreciated both his dedication to his craft and his enthusiasm for sharing his knowledge with his readers and viewers.

I also appreciated his determination to keep the discussions in this forum civil, his belief that people could disagree while remaining calm and mutually respectful, and his occasional polite but firm admonitions when things got out of hand.  It always struck me (from my south-of-the-border perspective) as ... ahh ... very Canadian — and in my opinion it is one of the characteristics that has made this site such a productive place.  I hope you and Chris will make a special effort to preserve this part of his legacy as you go forward.  Michael's untimely passing should remind all of us that life is too short to waste time being pissed-off.

I first met Michael when we moved to Toronto in 2002. We became close friends, collaborated on numerous initiatives over the years and I can't begin to enumerate all I have learned about photography in general and digital imaging in particular from associating with Michael, notwithstanding that I had been into photography in a non-professional capacity for decades before. He was a genuine friend, a great teacher, an enormous personality, a great innovator, had a great disposition and was just one of the most honest-to-goodness persons to be with. His passing is a great loss to his family, friends, and the world-wide photographic community. He faced the last several years of his life with great courage, indeed an object-lesson in how to face life's most difficult challenges with equanimity and positiveness. May he rest in peace.

I am very sorry and sad to hear the news. I learnt so much from LuLa, this is the place where my photographic journey began.

Here's a story that I will remember: I was sitting at the terrace of a café in Paris a few years ago - this was during the Leica M8 days - when my girlfriend told me "Look, look, this is the guy from the videos!". Michael was getting ouf of a cab with a friend of his and their wives. I had spent so much time watching the LuLa DVDs that my girlfriend had recognized Michael. As our attention shifted to him, our baby girl who was playing with sugar packets swallowed one and started to choke. We took care of her; she was fine of course.

I feel extremely grateful for Lula. Michael will be missed, what a life well lived! I will regret not attending a LuLa workshop with him.

My condolences to his family, friends and the Lula team. Best wishes to Kevin and Chris.

Sail on Michael, merci!

Franck

Gosh what a shock. Michael was like a sort of photographic Mount Rushmore - an immensely familiar sight that I'd never actually seen but who was monumental in my personal pantheon. Form the first day I entered the digital world, Michael was my guide. Clever, discerning, independent minded, funny, wise and talented, his views and reviews were always the most interesting and well considered. I often considered joining one of his workshops or photo trips but never quite got round to it and now I wish I had.

I got a strong impression that he was a very generous man. Now he's gone and while I really wish I'd met him, I also feel that he was able to transmit a lot of himself through his articles and that therefore somehow I knew him quite well.

My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends and colleagues. He was that rare thing: a pioneer who continued to lead. He will be widely and deeply missed.

Very shocking and sad news.
I only discovered this, just this morning, in my hospital bed.

I knew Michael had had a large operation for cancer a couple of years back but I had no idea that his health was an ongoing issue.

Condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
And strength!

IMHO Jeff Schewe seems to have summed up Michael's spirit the best with that posted image and the comment "Keep shooting".

Kind Regards

I am at a loss for words.  I did notice there was less and less of his involvement in the forums, but did not connect that to his cancer.  Condolences to his family and to Kevin and Chris.  It now appears that he was planning for the future of Lula for some time, knowing this was possible. He gave us all a great gift and none of us can adequately recognize the long-term value it may yet have.  I'm married to a teacher so I have a tiny little understanding, but teaching and encouraging pay dividends now and in the years to come over and over.

I am so sorry to hear about Michael's passing.  I have thourghly enjoyed LuLa since about 2000.  Michael has helped me with photography in many ways.  He has been one of my main sources for learning about photography and gear.  He was always clear and concise in his tutorials, reviews and essays.  His Lightroom tutorials are fabulous! The photographers that he collaborated with for his videos and essays have always been first rate.

I loved following his trips to far off places often wishing I could be there too.  It is amazing how you can connect with someone you have never met and be so affected by his loss.

Best wishes to Kevin and Chris moving forward with LuLa.  I will be a member for many years to come.

Thank you Michael,

Wow!  I'm stunned!  I've been a member of the forums here for years, and have always been impressed with them and the main website as they reflected the love of photography and people, the ability to remain focused on goals and the way to reach them, and the organization brought to Lu-La by Michael.  The tone set here has made this one of the most vital photographic communities on the web.

I also value so much that twinkle in Michael's eyes when he would ask a tongue-in-cheek question of Jeff in the wonderful video tutorials they made. He brought a real sense of humanity to everything he did here.  Sincere condolences to his family and the people with whom he worked to build and grow this wonderful website.

Although I was aware of Michael's illness this still an awful shock. I was privileged to travel and shoot on many trips with Michael from Big Bend to Iceland, from Namibia to Bosque del Apache, from Newfoundland to Antarctica. These are all some of my finest memories. He was a great teacher and travel companion.

I first met him at Vistek in Toronto where one of the staff introduced him to me as the man "who has just started a photographic website - called Luminous Landscape". Little did we know it was destined to become the most visited website in the industry.

Sadly I had lunch with him a little while back and he paid, on the basis that it would be my turn next. I wish that were still possible.

To his other friends and family, my most sincere condolences.

Bill

Rest Easy Michael,
Kevin in CT

Yes, it's a sad day in so many ways, because we have lost someone who has contributed so immeasurably to our joy and endless fascination with the hobby/profession we love. However, I do hope that his family is comforted knowing what an amazing and enduring legacy he has left. Kevin/Chris, please do let them know.
I was at that get together at Foos in what, 1999 or 2000 from which Kevin has posted a photograph. Those were the very early, embryonic days when MR was building the LuLa. Digital had not really arrived on the scene, and Michael was still far away from the major presence in the photography firmament that he became. I posted a bit early on about my "workflow" (nobody called it a "workflow" in those days), and lo and behold, Michael personally started a private email exchange with me comparing notes. RIP, Michael. You will be sorely missed. A little bit of all of us has died as well.

RIP Michael, and my sentiments to his wife and family. I keep you in my thoughts.

It was information here that initially got me into digital in 2001. In the next couple of years I would email fairly often with Michael. At one point he did reviews of member's images. I sent in a couple that he informed me were just not up to scratch. It was a proud moment indeed when he published one of mine and gave it a glowing review. Thanks for all the inspiration, Michael. He put up the good fight, and while alive he lived. A lot to admire here.

I'm going to be honest, and say that this sucks.  I had always hoped to meet Michael on one of the LL adventures.  I've been a reader of this site for most of it's existence.  Michael was a huge inspiration to my photography.  His articles on photographic craft always had great nuggets of useful techniques - both artistic and equipment related.  His honest gear reviews, along with his real world user experience, were second to none.  When I was making the switch from film to digital (many years ago now), Michael's articles were the most helpful.  I only know him from what others have said about him, but he just seemed like such a talented, fun guy, with a gift for teaching.  Thanks to his foresight and generosity, his legacy will live on.  Thank you, Michael!

To those closest to him, I can only say that I am so sorry for your loss.  He was an amazing, generous man, who gave a TON back to the photographic community.

Oh crap ... this is a very sad start of the day for me. LL is the only site I pay subscription for and it's in large part due to Michaels work.

Can't find suitable words to express my feelings. It's as if a part of my daily routine, practiced for years, suddenly vanished. It's that stupid feeling when you stop in the middle of something you are used doing and realize you can't do it anymore. Leaves an empty space in your soul.

My thoughts go to his family, I hope that Michael's enduring strength and spirit will help them to overcome this difficult period in their lives. I have been a member from this community since early on, and I remember with pride when Michael once took the time to comment and criticize one of the first photos I made in the SW Portuguese coast, one of the places I most love to photograph.

In his memory, here is that photo, taken on a cold afternoon in February 2000, with slide film, and with a 50mm lens. He said he liked the light, and how the triangular shape in the clouds complemented the similar shape in the waves... I have learned so much from him.

This is awful news.
Although we've never met, Michael and the Luminous Landscape community has taught me so much. This is a sad day for photography as a whole and especially for the wonderful community here at Luminous Landscape.

My thoughts are with all of his family, friends and colleagues the world over.

Thank you for everything Michael.

Sad news, considering I just "met" Michael today.

I joined the site a couple of days ago and was beginning to watch the video series he did with Seth on digital asset management. I took a break from watching and was looking at the What's New section when I saw the announcement of his death. Being 69 years old myself, I can certainly understand the "inevitable day" that comes to us all. Still, it's never easy when it takes your friends.

Thankfully, Michael will live on for a long time, thanks to the vast body of work he leaves behind. Have a good journey, Michael, and send back some pictures.

I met Michael at his studio in Toronto in 2009 and we had lunch together, after which he gave me a copy of his latest book, which was a very nice touch.  Before that we both had Flextight scanners and had exchanged views on that and an Epson 2000 printer.  He was generous with his time and a great guy all round.  He is someone who touched so many people.  It is a very, very sad day.

I too, have never met Michael. But the few times we have corresponded, he was nothing but a gentleman.

Many years ago, when I was first getting into digital photography, I looked all over the internet to educate myself. There were no "Blogs" run by sponsored evangelists writing thinly disguised advertorials back then. Only a handful of sites and LuLa was the best of them all. I was introduced to Michael's work, literary and photographic, back then and they have been educating me ever since, to this day.

Years later, when I wanted to explore medium format photography, it was the same situation. LuLa was arguably the best site with info on this topic and many of those articles were penned by Michael. I have spent coutless hours on this site and am astounded by the fact that no matter what obscure piece of equipment or techinque I search for, there is an article about it here.

Every one of us is born to die someday and the best we can hope for is that we leave a large enough mark in this world for people to remember us by, long after we're gone. LuLa is that mark for Michael, his legacy. And years from now, we will remember what a great person, autho, photographer and teacher he was through LuLa.

Godspeed, Michael Reichmann. Thank you for all you have done for this community.

Very sad, I think all any of us can hope for is that in some small way we have a positive affect on those nearest to us, leaving them richer for our presence, Michaels reach was further than most of us can ever imagine, I hope he was able to reflect and feel justifiably proud of his achievements.

Still unable to come to terms with this sad news.

I did suggest to Michael on this site and through an email or two over the years, that he should write a biography of his life in photography, because I would have loved to read it, but as far as I am aware he never did, so perhaps these two short videos are the nearest thing we will see and hear about his life and his career in photography.

During the last weeks I was wondering why there were no comments or articles from Michael......and even thought that something was maybe wrong......this morning when  I opened the LL page and saw the picture of Michael with a tripod and a camera I first thought ..."well, Michael is back and this is probably an article about the last Phase One camera...great!", but as I moved down and read that there was a sad day I was shocked........I will miss him, his articles, comments and videos.....his videos with Jeff were not only great as educative but also as a moment of fun and I would say a "classic".  Both, Michale and Jeff,  constituted a perfect couple for such videos. I have all of them and I will revisit some tonight to remember him and the nice moments that I "shared" with them in the videos  in the not so far past. My condolences to his family and near friends.

Such a profound voice in our world of photography.  I have lost count of the number of times I've shared the ETTR article with friends making the transition to digital.

But more enduring is the sense of the man that Michael Reichmann was - that we felt through his words: adult, civil, Canadian, humble, funny, with a gravitas of knowledge and experience.

We should all strive to be as kind and sharing with our fellow human beings as MR was.

Relatively new to Lula, I'd quickly come to see Michael's playful humor as leavening (with his experience) an endeavor that otherwise all too often tempts us to engage ourselves much too seriously. His love of photography and his mastery and gave off a vision of the endeavor unburdened by self-conscious self-concern. I found that compelling enough to stick it out, to wade into his material, and to learn something - even as he intended and afforded - from my distant portal on his Luminous Landscape. Thank you, Michael! Glory to God for your life and your gift. My prayers for your family, your friends, and all you touched. Memory eternal!

Stopped by my local wine & spirits emporium this afternoon…the photo shows the result. Good to know Michael wasn't drinking the cheap stuff!   ;D  Now that I've swallowed one neat I get the appeal too. It has the sweetness of a good bourbon combined with Scots complexity & tang.

I dropped into his gallery in Toronto,  perused his prints and we had an uplifting talk about photography. I was in much better spirits when I left and emailed him to that effect. He has been a tremendous resource for those of us who had to transition from film to the digital realm.

I just sent a quick email to Kevin, but I'll just post it here:

I met Michael through LuLa well over a decade ago. I followed his travels, watched and purchased as much as the videos as I could, and read the articles. It was the de-facto standard for real “usability” reviews, as he putted on every single one of them. I cherish in my heart the good days of the Lightroom tutorials with Jeff Schewe. I feel very sad that I won’t see any more of them, although you Kevin do a really great job filling up his shoes. I also love the way you and Jeff interact, but there was something about Michael, he was so serious and just right and proper, and Jeff in contrast such a “wildish” soul, that was really a pleasure watching them.
I remember spending countless hours watching all the tutorials on Sundays, over a few glasses of wine. My wife told me once “Are you watching the little old men again?”.

I couldn’t believe when I saw the news on DPReview, in which I’m moderator for the micro 4/3s forum.

Please Kevin, pass on my most dearest and sincere condolences and support to the family and friends of Michael, and the LuLa family. As you are committed to keeping up to Michael’s memory, I’m also committed and will continue to support LuLa as long as it exists.

Very sad day indeed.

God Speed, Michael. Go now and shoot the heavens for all eternity.

Rest in peace

I recently produced an informational video on pancreatic cancer. There has been virtually no progress in treating pancreatic cancer in the last fifty years. Four of five people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer are dead within six months of their diagnosis. That said, there has been a lot of progress in treating other cancers and we have made tremendous progress in treating other diseases that killed people with regularity. That progress has people living longer and thus more likely to eventually have cancer. Everyone must eventually die of something. As we make progress with other disease states, cancer seems to be the one. It's my recollection that Michael was either cured or in long term remission but it returned as it often does. It is a sad state of affairs. All I can say is as a community of artists, we were blessed to have Michael and continue to be blessed to have Chris and Kevin. My father was a wonderful man and taught me well. One of the lessons he impressed on me was that people shouldn't have to wonder how we feel about them and trying to make up a lifetime of communication with someone in the last hours of their life is fruitless. Tell them how you feel. I'm sure Michael felt all of our admiration, but now we must also express our gratitude for Chris and Kevin. They have big shoes to fill and have done well. Thank you Chris and Kevin.

Normally I check this site, almost daily.  What sad news, all I can say is that his memory will be a blessing to all of us.  When he first posted that he had cancer, I told him that I was a survivor and just keep believing and you will get well.  This is so sad and all of us who were exposed to the site and his work will truly miss him.

Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss.
I have visited LuLa over the years, and joined it this year - I never expected anything like this.

My condolences to Michael's family and friends. My family too has been affected by this terrible disease, having recently lost my father, a great artist and mentor. I am also, thankfully, a two time survivor.

Michael has left a great legacy that will live on for those who will remember his humour and knowledge which he shared freely.

Regards,
Raymond

I discovered LuLa around the time that I began experimenting with digital photography. This site has been enormously helpful and inspiring over the years. When I read the announcement of Michael's passing and sat down to think about it, I realized just how much LuLa and Michael's presence has been part of my photographic life, and perhaps, life in general. Early on, I had an e-mail exchange with Michael and was struck by his willingness to help a stranger that shared a similar interest. His personality, expressed through this site, showed me just how positive the Internet can be. Besides his expertise as a photographer and writer, I think that we should add educator to the list.

I am at a point in life where condolences have become too familiar an activity. When I finish writing this, I'll make a contribution to the endowment, in his memory.

I get tears in my eyes reading this message. Luminous-landscape was the first site I ever visited when I started with digital photography full time back in 2003. Michael Reichmann thought me so much in the beginning. I felt something was wrong when he didn’t participated on the website as he used to do the last few years after his illness. Rest in peace Michael, you will be remembered and loved!

What a sad message. I'm so sorry. He was my favourite source of knowledge on digital photography since 2001 and I wanted to get to know him at an Antarctica expedition after my retirement. So I have to wait for my last journey.

RIP Michael

GodSpeed to you Michael.

LuLa was the first site for one of my images to appear online in the long defunct critique section and where a few images from a 2002 workshop still survive. His critique did not pan the one from Arizona's Petrified Forest for which I am still grateful.

That Bosque Workshop December 2002 was my conversion from occasional snapshooter to photographer. Thank you Michael. Thank you Chris and the other attendees.  A week later I also received the diagnosis of cancer (prostate) whose spectre had haunted me throughout the trip.

How does one put into words thanks for all of the story telling and information that Michael put into the articles on LuLa? I have been a reader here for well over 10 years.

The knowledge that the last has been written by him is hard to accept.

My condolences to his family and friends.

What a sad day after reading this. RIP Michael! My personal condolences to Michael's family and all the Lula team.

My days with Lula go back to the very beginning as I have all the VJ starting with number 1 (volume 1). All my learning and inspiration for photography came and continue coming mainly from this site. I always remember in one VJ - Michael and a fellow photographer (from the UK I believe) looking for something to shoot in a beach as it was not much there - and Michael repeating while walking...messy, messy, messy - and the other fellow looked at him and responded "embrace the mess". He then mentioned this quote in many occasions. I use it all the time!

I always dream in joining one of the Antartica trips and maybe some day will happen. This would be very special for me because while I reside in the U.S., I was born and grew up in Santiago - Chile. While I know and travelled this beautiful geography, I have never gone that deep....

I hope to meet you sometime Kevin (and Chris), as we live not that far away (Avon). Keep up the good work.

I will miss Michael a lot!!

I never met I Michael but had always wanted to sit and have a couple of beers with him.  His passion, intelligence, and especially his north-of-the- border wit had always shone through in his writings and videos.

There is no doubt I'm a better and more impassioned photographer because of him.

A toast to a teacher and friend I never met!

I'm only a newcomer to LuLa, and his voice and presentations certainly were key in making me feel right at home.  My wife came by as I was watching one of his videos.  "Hanging with the lads?", she said.  Indeed I felt I was.

My thoughts are with his friends and family.  A big loss.

Like many of us, I had no idea how sick he was. What a huge loss to us all. He was very special in his ability to remain humble and always have a practical stance in his reviews and opinions. Although we never met, I felt like he was a close friend. I learned more from his website and videos on landscape photography and processing images, than any other source.

Thank you Michael, you will be missed...... my condolences to his close friends and family.

I met Michael at the first Digital Fine Art Photographers Summit in Arizona in 2003 organized and hosted by Alain Briot and Uwe Steinmueller. Michael was one of the guest lecturers. Also in attendance was Thomas Knoll, the creator of Photoshop.

The event was great and first one of its kind that I attended. Michael was fun to be around and I learned a lot during the three days of the Summit. Before then and since, I have been an avid fan of Michael and The Luminous Landscape.

He made a tremendous contribution to the digital photography community. I hope that the work that he and Chris started will continue with Chris and more recent team members and contributors.

I extend my heartfelt sympathies and prayers to Michael's family and close friends.

With warm regards,

Thanks to Michael and Chris I am a photo geek and proud of it. In 2007 I bought a Canon 20D to shoot my kids junior hockey. My shots were terrible! I found Lula and what a true life change it was for my photographic journey. 2008 a trip to Algonquin with Michael, Chris and Jack Dykinga. Then in 2014., I got to hang with Michael, Chris, Kevin and William Neill in Antarctica. Both were transformative experiences but paled  in comparison to at least weekly visits to Lula and numerous video downloads(Camera to Print is still the most memorable and relative. Felt like Michael and Jeff were close friends iteaching me at home)
Michael I am forever in your debt and hope to pay it forward.
Peace to you, family, Chris and Kevin.

Michael gave so much to all and without asking or expecting anything back.

Transitioning from film, I recall sitting in a friend's condo in Florida with a brand new Canon 1D, a brand new Mac laptop loaded with Photoshop and having absolutely no idea what to do with any of it.  I stumbled onto LuLa, found Michael's tutorials and got my start in digital photography by listening to Michael and looking over his shoulder to see what boxes he had checked in PS.
I was extremely grateful for that and all of the other information gleaned from this site over the years.  Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Michael in person I felt I knew him and he felt like a friend.  I'll miss him.

Quite shocked to hear this I have not been very active on the site or other ones so the news was a shock.
I can't pretend to have known Michael; we had some interesting exchanges and didn't always agree on some topics. But there was always respect and I for one appreciated his witty humour and interesting articles. He was always polite sometimes firm and opinionated (which is a good thing you knew where he stood). I enjoyed his photography and the work he put into this site.
I've been around for about 10 years if not a bit longer as a spectator on the LL - if there is a testament to the site and it's achievements Michael conveyed that passion (often overused but clearly he had it in large quantities) few have. The effect was it lifted others and inspired them. We all share a common interest it brought people together.

For that I am grateful to Michael you will be sorely missed.

Rest well and God Bless Michael,

I consider myself very fortunate to have spent a day with Michael at his studio years ago in a one -on- one clinic.  I got lucky and secured a spot as soon as I saw his invitation.  It was a fun and wonderful experience.  In that single day I learned more than I had in the previous year - and felt like I gained a true friend.  He was an incredibly warm and genuine man.  At the end of the day in the studio we drove to his home, shared a glass of wine and talked cameras and computers. It was as if we were old friends.  One of my biggest regrets in life will be that I never was able to join him on any subsequent adventures.
RIP - I will miss him.
Sincere condolences to his family and close friends.

Very sad news indeed. I've gone back to photography in the beginning of the last decade and LuLa has always been my primary source of information photography wise. From ETTR and digital blending techniques to instructional and entertaining videos, I always felt that this site had it all. I've never met Michael in person but like others I feel I have lost a good friend, and a mentor to my photo endeavours. The more I think about it the more I feel that many of us had this sort of relation to MJ, that of a "student" to a photography mentor - no matter how experienced one is/was.

My sincerest condolences to his family and close friends.

It isn't often that I get floored reading of the passing of someone I have never met, but it really impacted me when I learned of Michael's passing. Photography is my greatest passion in life, and there is no other place from where I have learned more about the tools and craft of photography than from Luminous Landscape. His loss brought it all home to me just how much Michael's contributions, his website, and his innumerable articles and video products have helped me over the years in my photography. The amount of debt I owe to what I have learned through Michael's web presence is incalculable.

In watching his videos, you could see Michael had not only a great personality, but great ideas, that touched thousands of photographers worldwide. His Luminous Landscape platform gave many of the best photographers (and software developers) a "meeting place" to exchange ideas and, in so doing, gave beginners (like I was) a way to improve their photography exponentially by the ability to read the advice/experiences of some of the best photographers and minds all in one place. And at the helm of it all was Michael, always developing some new article or video to help the rest of us improve our photography.

Michael's shoes are unfillable in this community; a void will be there and remain each time I visit this site.

Michael is blessed to have some great friends (Kevin Raber, Jeff Schewe, Nick Devlin, Chris Sanderson) who will keep Michael's Luminous Landscape going for the rest of us. It won't be the same without him, but Luminous Landscape is here to enjoy because of him.

I close this by offering my sincerest condolences to his friends and his family who have lost him, as well as my sincerest gratitude to Michael for all his great contributions: Thank You Sir.

Jack

I have started and stopped adding my thoughts to this thread over the past several days, because words seemed inadequate. They still do, but neither do I want to stay silent.

As so many others have recounted, I never met Michael in person, but I felt an affinity. He and his ideas and creations that contributed to this community have been a part of my personal development in photography (digital especially) almost since the beginning. I followed his articles and explorations, and those of many other guest authors who coalesced around the early Luminous Landscape site. I have the LL Video Journal DVD's from issue #1. I have followed the forums for years, though sometimes not as closely as at other times. I corresponded with Michael briefly on a particular topic, about which he responded promptly and generously. I just went back and re-read that exchange... 2007, can it be? Man, how time is flying by.

Photography has taken on a large and fulfilling role in my life, and Michael and Luminous Landscape were significant reference points along the way. I'm very pleased that his foresight and association with valued team members means that Luminous Landscape will continue. At the same time, it's sorrowful to consider us all being here without Michael. The best way I have come up with to wrap my head around it is that his almost boundless enthusiasm, generosity and creativity gave form to something that took on a good life of its own, and gave us the ability to share in it. Now we can continue to honour Michael's influence and memory going forward.

To Chris, Kevin, Nick, Jeff, Mark and others who knew him well, your colleague and friend was truly a one-of-a-kind. To Michael's family, those of us who knew him, or of him, through photography mourn his departure with you. The loss you're coping with is only as great as it is because of the presence of this man in your lives in the first place. Thanks for sharing Michael with us for all these years.

And to Michael Reichmann, I'll paraphrase your and Kevin's parting words -- I'll remember you on the luminous landscape.

Saddened to hear about [Michael]'s death he seems to have been a wonderful person.  I sure his family would be grateful for the heart-felt expression of love that the Luminous Landscape fraternity have bestowed on him.

I have not visited LuLa in a while and am just hearing this news. My condolences to his friends and family.

I am not a landscape photographer but have been a reader since the early days. This has always been a great space for the practice of photography and Michael's enthusiasm made the site stand out. He was a wonderful educator and I learned a lot from him.

I can say without hesitation that his work through The Luminous Landscape enriched my life.

He will be missed.

Just to add my thoughts and thanks to what MR did.

I was saddended to hear the news.

Been here since 2003 or so, navigated going digital, going raw, doing ETTR, going to a (kodak then Sinar) MFDB, and Capture One all with a lot of help from MRs articles and this forum.

Thoughts to all who knew him face to face.

I was SO sad to read about Michaels passing.  :'(
I have not kept up with this site in some time, but I have bought and watched all the video journals and allways loved watching Michael talk about his passion. He seemed like such a likeable kind man. He inspired me and a SO many others to get out there and engage in photography.

My regards to all his friends and family and you WILL be missed Michael.
