Title: Teleconverters
Post by: cricketer 1 on April 04, 2006, 11:08:01 pm

Have Nikon D70 and need a teleconverter for my Nikon 300mm f4 AF ED (not S model) prime lens.  Searched Nikon web site and other sources without luck, so tried Kenko Pro 300 x1.4 at local Toronto store and it worked for metering and AF.  A Sigma converter provided metering, but not AF.  Will purchase Kenko if no member can direct me to a compatible Nikon converter

Thanks,

I'm afraid teleconverters is a weakness of the Nikon line up. The AFS teleconverters will not mount on your lens. The recommended Nikon one is the TC-14B which does not give AF and I think it does not even give metering. The feedback I've seen is that the Kenko matches the TC-14B in terms of quality on an APS body due presumably to cropping of the corners. Also the D70 has a modest resolution anyway.

As an aside, an AFS teleconverter will mount on your lens if you remove the small tab from the TC. But you will not get AF.

A good site for Nikon info is www.NikonLinks.com.

Thanks for that info LeifG.  I will look at the NikonLinks site as you suggest.  Metering is more important to me than AF for this application.  I think I will mount the Kenko again at the dealer and take a few shots from the sidewalk just to see if there are any shortcomings I may have missed.

The Nikon Links site you refererred provided excellent information on teleconverters, etc.  I purchased the x1.4 Kenko PRO 300 converter after some basic tests at the dealer and have since used it on my Nikon 300 AF ED f4 and Nikon 180 AF ED f2.8 lenses for wildlife, landscape and distant architectural photography both in good and relatively poor light with excellent results.  Autofocus on both lenses is fast and accurate (I discovered that my eyes for manual focus are not what they were) so this is a bonus.  Also has good contrast and colour and is well manufactured.

I realize that this is primarily a Canon site, but for other Nikon registrants with the AF prime lenses, Kenko fills the gap that Nikon left.

Thanks again
