Title: Just wanted to share some laughts ...
Post by: fr3d on February 22, 2006, 08:16:16 pm
I just stumbled about a really weird photographer/
website. Figured I might as well share some good
laughts with with you:

"TRIPODS and CAMERA SUPPORTS - Just Say No"
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/tripods.htm (http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/tripods.htm)

"A 100 MP Digital Camera System for Under $2,000"
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/100mp.htm (http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/100mp.htm)

"Film vs. Digital Cameras"
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/filmdig.htm (http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/filmdig.htm)

The list goes on..

This guy is amazing, sometimes I can't
decide if I should laugh or cry! Well, at
least he doesnt have Equipment Angst allright.

Maybe this one is more interesting:

The San Francisco Museum of Mordern Art put up
an interactive website featuring "Ansel Adams at 100"
interactively with voice and video comments on his
works (haven't sufed the whole site yet)

Hilarious... here is my favorite funny quote:

Quote
Scanned film pixels are better than digital camera pixels.

or

Quote
Digital cameras use a black-and-white CCD painted over with red, green and blue spots and then interpolate (make up) red, green and blue values pixels for each pixel location with the aid of digital hocus-pocus (smearing) called Bayer interpolation.

Regardless, a lot of good info on this site. My only regret is that it took me decades to figure all this out for myself.

I'm lucky, I can afford the latest and greatest. I know a lot of people who are far, far better photographers than I'll ever be, but can't afford to keep up with digital. It's great to have someone stating the honest fact that a satisfying photograph doesn't require the latest, expensive equipment. So full credit to this guy.

Rockwell's site is the subject of endless flamewars on certain other forums.

He makes a lot of sweeping generalizations (like the ones previously aluded to in this thread) and I think his detractors take issue when he does that without specifically qualifying them as his personal opinions (or without putting what he's saying into a context that makes sense). It doesn't bother me at all; I just ignore him when I think he's wildly wrong.

I think there's often a grain of truth is his most sensationalistic statements. Some of his premises (that artistry and technique are important than equipment, for example) are refreshingly accurate. I probably wouldn't trust his opinion on any particular piece of equipment, but I find some of his philosophical pieces worth the time it takes to read them.

Whatever one thinks of him, and I'm not sure I would urinate on him if he was on fire, I have to admire the chutzpah of the guy. Do a Google search on some item of photography, and the odds are that his site will be among the top items. He must be making a fortune from his advertising due to the high traffic. Whether or not he is a good photographer, he is a very good self marketer.
