Title: Canon L where to buy?
Post by: FrankM on February 13, 2006, 07:58:43 am
Hi,
am living in Germany and I am going to fly to Sydney in the next months. I could make a stopover in Singapore or Hongkong.
Does somebody know some internet shops where I can see some prices.
Im looking for a Canon 24-105L (1000 Euro or about 1200 US$ in Germany) or 24-70 a bit more.
Is it worth to look?
Thanks

In Singapore the standout pro photo store is Cathay Photo (http://www.cathayphoto.com.sg/) - reliable and helpful, unfortunately they don't list prices online. Email them.

I can't really remember anywhere specific in HK. Do be careful with suppliers though - make sure you know what you should be getting, and make sure it's in the box before you leave... There have been rumours of people leaving stores in HK with a box which they think contains a camera/laptop, only to find a brick when they unwrap it at home.

Also remember to check out the warranty situation before you buy.

Yes, those guys are very helpful.

I recommend the shop in Peninsula Plaza, though, since that's the bigger one. But they'll call up their shop in Marina Square for you to check if something is in stock there. Just be sure to ask if whatever's in stock has been reserved by another customer or not (I guess it's a cultural thing).

You should also check out the camera stores at Sim Lim Square in Singapore, it's possible to get very good deals there, if you're willing to walk back and forth and barter.

Remember to pay in cash if possible, that way you can chat down the price with another 3-5 percent (they pay a premium to credit card companies).

Also make sure that you get a completed GST return form, so that you can get a refund for those 5 percent at the airport!
