Title: OLympus OM-D EM1 Dust on CCD
Post by: Barry B on May 04, 2015, 07:47:56 am
Hello All

I believe I have a piece of dust/hair on my CCD as it keeps showing up on my images. I've changed and cleaned the lenses and it still shows up on some images. Usually an image with an uncomplicated background; sky as an example.

So my question is, how do I get rid of it. With a DLSR I would take a brush and clean the mirror. Is it similar for the CCD?

Thanks for any assistance.

The first thing I'd try is a Rocket Blower. The chances are that that will cure it but if not and if calling up the cameras cleaning function doesn't either then it'll mean a wet clean.

If you can't blow it off you can either get a sensor cleaning kit or most camera shops will do it quickly and cheaply. Don't use a brush, you shouldn't on a mirror either.

Yep.  If still under guarantee, I'd call Olympus; it may be a fault with the camera's anti-dust feature.

First of all, is a CMOS chip in this camera, not CCD.  I mention this as  the coatings and or filters on the sensor may be unique, thus if you wet clean make sure the solution you use is compatible.

I don't feel you can expect to ever have a built in "dust removal" system get all of the dust, albeit the one in the Canon 5D MKII did a very good job.  If you have a hair, then you should be able to blow it off with a rocket blower.  If this won't get it off, then you would need to consider a wet cleaning.

There are many companies/methods to use, some to consider are Visible Dust, or Eclispe and a pec pad.  You need to check with each company to make sure which solution they recommend to be used on your sensor and the swap type.  Most of these companies have a list you can read over.

The chip in your camera is a micro 4/3's so it's smaller than APS-C, make sure to get a swab for that sized sensor.  EM1 is mirrorless, so when you take off the lens, you will see the exposed sensor and can try the blow off method first, then try the swab.

If you don't feel comfortable with a wet cleaning, then you can always send it off. to Oly.  But this is a pretty standard process now.

I once had a hair trapped inside my E-M1. It wouldn't dislodge with a brush or blower, so I had to extract it (very carefully) with a pair of plastic tweezers.

On Oly's with IBIS it is not recommended to wet clean it yourself. The sensor may be knocked out of alignment or damage to the IBIS. That said, before I came upon this information, I wet cleaned my EM5 with no damage. I was probably lucky.
